At Anglesey, we aim to give the children a taste of the fascinating world in which they live and an environment in which they can pose questions about it. To achieve this, we provide a creative curriculum based around the Cornerstones Curriculum.

The Cornerstones Curriculum is a nationally recognised approach for delivering outstanding learning opportunities for children. We have adapted some of the content to make the most of opportunities that suit our school community.

What is the Cornerstones Curriculum?

The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the Primary National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations.

Our curriculum is delivered through Imaginative Learning Projects (ILPs) which provide a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of our children’s learning.

We believe children learn better when they are encouraged to use their imagination and apply their learning to engaging contexts. Our curriculum provides lots of learning challenges throughout the academic year that requires children to solve problems, apply themselves creatively and express their knowledge and understanding effectively across the curriculum.

Our Aims

  • Create a wow-use hands on experiences, visitors and visits to spark interest and broaden our children's experiences.
  • Build on prior knowledge- ‘baseline’ children’s understanding to establish the questions that need exploration.
  • Ensure progress- through class discussion and teacher-pupil feedback, celebrate knowledge, skills, and understanding acquired.
  • Answer the big questions-ensure that core subject knowledge is taught, shared and understood.
  • Apply-teach and nurture the skills that will help children to tackle future challenges they may face. Foster future scientists, philosophers, artists and explorers by teaching the essential skills of enquiry, creativity and communication.
  • Make it holistic-link English and Maths skills wherever possible to showcase their relevance and place in the wider world
  • British Values-promote the fundamental British values (FBV) of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty and respect and tolerance through project work to secure a tolerant and integrated community.

Home Learning

At the end of each half-term, children will be set home learning with a project focus. This will enable your child to research the geographical, historical and scientific knowledge underpinning their new project. This pre-learning will be shared with their class to help shape the focus for future lessons and establish the questions that need exploring.
