At Action for Happiness Northamptonshire, we believe that true transformation happens locally—one person, one conversation, and one neighborhood at a time. A shining example of this "ripple effect" in action is the Semilong Community Exchange, led by Director Jo Morris.
Between January and June, Jo and her team hosted a series of 9 Action for Happiness sessions, welcoming nearly 180 attendances from local residents seeking connection, support, and practical tools for happier living
The real secret to the project's success lies in its accessible, "low-pressure" setup. Recognizing that walking into a group setting can sometimes feel overwhelming, the Semilong team used gentle conversation prompts alongside creative, hands-on activities to break the ice and make everyone feel immediately welcome:
Hands-On Wellbeing Crafts: Participants made "Community Hero" badges, painted ceramic hearts, and built dreamcatchers—using creative focus as a gentle gateway to conversation.
Interactive Reflection Walls: Visitors added post-it notes to shared walls highlighting "What makes me smile" and "Something I like about this place," creating an uplifting environment filled with shared gratitude.
Recharge & De-Stress Activities: Sessions explored practical tools for better sleep, managing digital screen time with fidget tools and "calm-tag" keyrings, and reframing negative thoughts.
Games and Informal Socials: From playing tabletop board games with Matthew Bushell from Action for Happiness to simply sharing a hot drink and biscuits, the atmosphere kept connection casual and comfortable.
Beyond boosting mood, these gatherings served as a vital community safety net. By building a safe, trusting, and non-judgmental environment, the team was able to hear about participants' day-to-day pressures and signpost them directly to crucial local support:
Food Security: Directly referring individuals in need to Restore, the local food bank.
Practical & Financial Advice: Helping residents complete PIP (Personal Independence Payment) forms and order essential vitamins.
Warmth & Cost of Living: Offering practical warmth check-ins during colder months, providing blankets, socks, and hot water bottles where needed.
Health & Safety: Providing signposting and sensitive support around mental health, housing insecurity, and general well-being concerns.
The impact has been so positive that Semilong Community Exchange is now embedding the Action for Happiness activity model into all of their ongoing community programs going forward!
"The approach has been very positively received. Multiple participants have reported positive changes in how they are feeling, and using low-pressure activities like crafts and colouring acts as a wonderful gateway into deeper conversation and support."
— Jo Morris, Director at Semilong Community Exchange
Semilong proves that when we come together to share small acts of kindness, mindfulness, and practical care, we build a stronger, more resilient Northamptonshire.
