Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

A review by Ana Lechman

Often considered “the original chick lit novel”, this witty comedy of manners quickly made it on my “favorite books” list. A charming 19th century novel about the courtship of the prideful Mr. Darcy and the prejudiced Elizabeth (Lizzy) Bennett, Pride and Prejudice captured me with its very first line. I quickly grew to adore Lizzy and I enjoyed how she evolved as a character throughout the book. This novel is very character driven, as exemplified by various interactions throughout it, especially those of Lizzy and Mr. Darcy. Their witty banter and clever mannerisms cement this novel’s status as a comedic romantic classic. I also loved the eloquent language and dialogue. It kind of made me wish people spoke like that in modern times! While the language was a bit elaborate at times, it was certainly manageable. For that reason I would recommend this book to those new to the classics genre or in the mood for something a bit more “beachy” than War and Peace and As I Lay Dying. No matter who is reading it and for what reason, I think they will thoroughly enjoy it as I did. I gave Pride and Prejudice 9/10 stars and recommend it highly!
