About Ms. Slater

Before I tell you much about me, let's talk briefly about the photo at the top of this page. I took it at one of the old Spanish missions in my hometown of San Antonio. While the limestone casing stones were undoubtedly beautiful in their raw, natural state, it's the spots were innumerable individuals- separated in time both from each other and from me- have left etched reminders of their lives that really speak to me. Who originally carved the limestone? What was that person's life like? How was it like mine? How was it different? Who carved the names and dates into the stone? What were their lives like? What were their hopes and dreams? What did they fear? The disciplines within Individuals and Societies speak to me for similar reasons. I'm fascinated by humans: where we come from; why we behave in the ways that we do; how are we similar; how are we different. I'm passionate about these questions, and nothing makes me happier than discussing them with my students.

Okay, now to the other stuff. I studied anthropology and geography in college and always expected to go to graduate school. But when the time came, I couldn't manage to pick a discipline. Then, one day, it suddenly occurred to me that if I taught high school social studies, I wouldn't ever have to make that choice. I could spend my days discussing history, economics, psychology, geography, anthropology, government . . . Now, I can't imagine ever doing anything else.

I live in Salisbury with my husband (He teaches Design Technology at MUHS!), two kids, one dog, two fish, a snail, and ten chickens. In our spare time, we go hiking, camping, reading, gardening, and do projects around the house. After years of moving (to different states and countries), we have finally found home.
