Chicago Eviction Resources

For Chicago tenants at risk of eviction because of COVID-19 you have the right to try to work out an agreement with your landlord. To use this right, you need to write, text or email your landlord that your income has gone down because of the pandemic (do not call or ask in person). Your landlord must negotiate with you. You can text "covid" or "notice" to 866-7RENTER (866-773-6837) to have a form notice texted to you or visit Rentervention.

If you have any type of subsidized housing, you have additional rights. You may have the right to ask to have your rent amount reduced (recertified) - you may even be able to ask that the reduction go back to when you lost your income if you had a good reason that you waited to ask.

Individuals without access to paid sick leave or unable to work due to COVID-19 can apply for unemployment insurance under the administration's expansion. Gov. Pritzker is working with the federal delegation and congressional leadership to push the Trump administration to allow the state to increase the length of benefits beyond 26 weeks as this crisis continues to provide significant fiscal challenges for Illinois families. In addition to support services, IMAS was established to forge connections between Iraqi and American society, and to facilitate the preservation and exchange of Iraqi culture. Our goal is to foster well-being and self-sufficiency for resettled refugees, and to use our multilingual and multicultural expertise to tailor our services to the unique needs of our clients— whom we serve regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity, nationality, or family size.

Our staff and volunteers speak Arabic, Assyrian, Kurdish, and Farsi. Almost all arrived to the United States as refugees themselves. These linguistic, cultural, and experiential connections with our Middle Eastern clients distinguish IMAS; there is no comparable organization serving this population in the Chicago area. Over the past nine years, IMAS has expanded to offer services to refugees, immigrants, asylees, and Special Immigrant Visa holders from all over the world, but we are proud to say that this founding spirit has only grown stronger— IMAS continues to be community-driven, refugee-powered, and closely attuned to the needs and voices of the population we serve.

The United Nations lists the Rohingya Muslims of northwestern Burma (Myanmar) among the most persecuted people in the world. Burma’s 1982 Citizenship Law denied the ethnic minority Muslim group legal status, rendering them stateless, and denying them the right education, work, and trav el. Since then, many of the Rohingya have been displaced by ethnic violence and have been forced to flee the persecution. The Rohingya Cultural Center was established in 2016, in Chicago’s West Ridge/West Rogers Park neighborhood, to serve the needs of the growing Rohigya refugee community. As many as 1000 Rohingya have been resettled in Chicago since 2010, with the overwhelming majority of them living in this.

The need for such a center, which could provide social services for the growing community, help with assimilation by providing much needed English language instruction, was first conceptualized by Nasir Zakaria, the center’s current director, and one of the first Rohingya refugees to arrive in Chicago. It opened on April 9, 2016. Since then, the number of programs and the number of constituents has only grown.

Today, our housing, seniors and immigrant services programming reflects a diverse client base, with needs that are equally diverse. As our reach now extends beyond the borders of Rogers Park, we renamed the organization Northside Community Resources in March of 2012. Under this new banner, we are re-committed to serving the people of our city's great north-side communities. The most recent addition to our spate of programs is the Multicultural Resource Program, which provides our immigrant and refugee neighbors with benefits assistance; culturally sensitive advocacy, and direct referrals to educational resources.
