Course Description

Course Objectives

This course introduces the concepts of stresses in materials of elementary structures due to the axial, twisting, sheering, and bending loading.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze material stress and strain components using the generalized Hook's law
  2. Analyze bars under mechanical and thermal stresses
  3. Design bar elements subject to thermal and mechanical loading
  4. Analyze simple shafts under torsional loading
  5. Identify different types of structural loading
  6. Analyze stress and strain in beam elements subject to lateral loading and initial deflections
  7. Design beam elements subject to lateral forces and bending moments
  8. Analyze sheer stresses in beams due to lateral loading
  9. Evaluate the principle stresses in structures
  10. Create simple computer programs to analyze one-dimensional structures
