Advanced Materials for Aerospace Structures

Course Objectives

This course is intended for senior students in the aerospace engineering program. Through this course, the students will be introduced to mechanics of composite materials including new and smart materials such as functionally graded materials, piezoelectric materials, and others.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify different types of materials used in composite structures
  2. Evaluate the Macroscopic properties of a composite lamina
  3. Evaluate the mechanical properties of composite beams and plates
  4. Analyse stresses and strains in simple composite stuctures
  5. Design simple composite plates
  6. Differentiate between different types of smart materials
  7. Analyze the mechanical properties of structures including smart materials
  8. Design actuators for structures' control
