A note about Healthful Living:

All students are required to be enrolled in Physical Education and Health.

Art

7th grade general art

This course is designed to explore fundamentals in media, styles and techniques, which lead to personal expression. This course provides the opportunity for students to work in areas such as drawing, painting, printmaking, and art history. Students will develop critical thinking skills in written and verbal art critiques.

8th grade general art

This course is designed to explore fundamentals in media, styles and techniques, which lead to personal expression. This course provides the opportunity for students to work in areas such as drawing, painting, mixed media, and art history. Students will develop critical thinking skills in written and verbal art critiques.

7th grade advanced art

Prerequisites: Must apply upon announcement of afterschool skill review session; must have earned an average of a 90 or above in 6th grade art.

This course provides for further development of the concepts and skills taught in general art with more intense study of composition and elements of design as applied in two and three dimensional forms.

8th grade advanced art

Prerequisites: Must apply upon announcement of afterschool skill review session; must have earned an average of a 90 or above in 7th grade general or advanced art.

This course provides for further development of the concepts and skills taught in general art with more intense study of composition and elements of design as applied in two and three dimensional forms.


Band

7th Grade Band/Orchestra Intermediate: This course is designed for students who have had previous training and have completed the beginning level requirements. Rehearsal and performances include some after school rehearsals and participation in band festivals and concerts. Assessments for this course will be based upon the NC Essential Standards for Intermediate Instrumental Music. Audition/Recommendation Required

7th Grade Percussion Intermediate: This course is designed for students who have had previous training in percussion studies and have completed the beginning level requirements. Rehearsal and performances include afternoon/evening rehearsals during the week, participation and performances at football games, marching band festivals, parades, and concerts. Assessments for this course will be based upon the NC Essential Standards for Intermediate Instrumental Music. Audition/Recommendation Required

8th Grade Band/Orchestra Proficient: This is an advanced level course designed for students who have had previous training and have passed the Intermediate Assessment. Rehearsal and performances include some after school rehearsals and participation in band festivals and concerts. Assessments for this course will be based upon the NC Essential Standards for Proficient Instrumental Music. Additional assessments to demonstrate advanced technique will be required. Audition/Recommendation Required

*develop high-level sight singing skills, learn music in 2-3 vocal parts for public performance

*some after-school and evening events required

*participate in evening concerts, All-County Chorus, field trip performances for judges (including Carowinds in the 2018-19 school year), community events

8th General:

*no audition required

*one semester

*learn sight singing skills and music in 1-2 vocal parts for performance during the school day

*evening concerts possible if the group would like

*no field trips

7th Advanced:

CTE

  • Seventh Grade: Digital Literacy & Keyboard and Basic Word Processing. The two nine week courses have to be paired together. Students will remain with me for the entire semester.
    • Digital Literacy: Students will be able to explore Computer Basics (fundamentals of computing and the components of the computer), The Internet Cloud Services and the World Wide Web (how you connect to the internet, browse Web pages, search engines, and exchange e-mail), Productivity Programs (an introduction to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher), Computer Security and Privacy (focusing how to protect yourself online), and Digital Lifestyles (audio, video, and photography).
    • Keyboarding and Basic Word Processing: Students will master the keyboard. Starting with understanding the touch method and home row keys. Moving forward to increase speed and accuracy. Lastly being able to format business documents.
  • Eighth Grade: Introduction to Office Productivity and Office Productivity Applications. The two nine week courses have to be paired together. Students will remain with me for the entire semester.
    • Introduction to Office Productivity: Students will be able to bring starting a business to life. Students will learn formatting for various business documents in Word, the purpose and delivery of presentations in PowerPoint, and spreadsheet basics using an accounting lenses in Excel.
    • Office Productivity Applications: Students will be able to take the knowledge of Excel deeper with advanced functions, charts, and graphs to analyze data. Students will also be able to explore the marketing side of business, using Publisher to create Business Cards, Flyers, Event Programs and more.

Spanish

7th grade Intro to Spanish: learn the basics of the Spanish language (can lead into Spanish 1 for high school credit in 8th grade)

8th grade Spanish 1: continue the basics of the Spanish language and learn about Spanish culture (prerequisite is Intro to Spanish) **this is year long and successful completion = high school credit)

8th grade General Spanish: prepare for Spanish 1 in high school (for students who did not take Intro to Spanish in 7th grade or who cannot take Spanish 1 for HS credit due to enrollment in other year long encores)

SPLASH/Dual Language

The middle school Conexiones curriculum is designed to provide students with essential attitudes, skills and knowledge for global citizenship, while exploring the complexity of current global issues in Spanish. Through embedded social entrepreneurship principles, Conexiones promotes an understanding of the student as an active participant in the world, with an important role and crucial responsibilities.

Prerequisite

Middle school students who have completed an elementary immersion program are in a unique situation. Due to the level of proficiency they have already attained, they require a more challenging Spanish course than non-immersion students.

STEM

7th Grade: Intro to Computer Science II

  • The course takes a wide lens on computer science by covering topics such as programming, physical computing, HTML/CSS, and data. The course inspires students as they build their own websites, apps, games, and physical computing devices.

8th Grade: Problem Solving and the Design Process

  • This course provides students with hands-on, problem-based learning opportunities that introduce the principles to develop, produce, use, and assess products related to engineering and technology. Students additionally develop individual and teamwork skills to participate in society and the workplace. Activities are focused on content related to engineering and technology as a body of knowledge, using resources and actions to: (1) apply engineering design, (2) use processes to produce artifacts and systems, (3) use devices, tools, and systems safely and appropriately, and (4) assess impacts on society and the environment.
