Purpose/mission: IGNITE is a unique “peer-to-peer” community center for young adults with high-functioning autism or Asperger’s Syndrome transitioning into adulthood. IGNITE offers activities and educational groups that foster independence and social interaction. Members work toward financial, educational, and employment success. IGNITE is a place where members come together to share ideas, learn practical skills, build friendships, and feel comfortable being themselves.
Population served: Young adults with high-functioning autism or Asperger’s Syndrome who are at least 18 years-old, have graduated from high school with their diploma, and are looking for ways to become involved in the community and increase their independence
Services/programs/resources offered:
IGNITE Greensboro offers two six-month sessions for young adults. Sessions include 40 hours per week of programming Monday-Friday, with a variety of day and evening hours, as well as two community weekend activities each month.
In the summer, IGNITE extends a temporary summer membership to rising high school seniors for our JUMP START summer program.
Costs/requirements to participate:
Candidates must be their own guardian. Those with limited guardianship will be considered on an individual basis.
Likely candidates will also have a desire to participate, the ability to work in a group, and beginning independence skills.
The year is broken into 2 semesters of 6 months each (Jan-June and July-Dec). The fee for each semester is $1500.00 or $250 per month. Payments can be made in: a) 3 payments of $500 b) session installments of $1500 or c) a single annual payment of $3000. IGNITE Greensboro offers rolling enrollment, meaning openings are filled as they become available. Tuition is pro-rated.
The Autism Society of North Carolina has limited funding to support scholarships for IGNITE. Scholarship awards are based on financial need and funds available.
