Organization name: Alamance Parks
Purpose/mission: Through our parks and programs, we encourage healthy lifestyles for children and adults, offer inclusive activities for all of our citizens, and provide access to the natural world. Alamance Parks has three major focus areas: the outdoors, community, and youth athletics. We provide access to the outdoors through a variety of parks and trails, serve our community through two community centers and our Special Populations programs, and offer year-round athletics options for community youth. Our mission is to provide parks, trails, and programs that inspire visitors and welcome all participants.
Population served: Alamance County community members
Services/programs/resources offered:
Special Olympics: Alamance Parks offers a diverse Special Olympics program providing children and adults who have intellectual disabilities the opportunity to train and compete in Olympic-type sports. The program is managed through Alamance Parks by the Special Populations Coordinator and is a chapter of Special Olympics North Carolina.
SOAC offers four local sports tournaments involving Alamance Burlington School System students, as well as eight and twelve-week training programs ending with tournaments and competition events at the State level.
Services are offered free of charge to persons with an intellectual disability from age eight through adult life. While many programs are specific to the ABSS schools and Elon Intramurals program, SOAC welcomes volunteers from the community as Unified Partners for athletes and as coaches for our various athletic offerings.
Visually Impaired Program: Alamance County offers the Visually Impaired Program (VIP’S) as a service to residents of Alamance County with visual impairments. Through this program we provide monthly leisure and recreational activities to enhance the quality of life for residents of Alamance County. Participants are welcome to involve family members and peers in these activities. Activities include coordinated events for young adults through seniors such as trips, luncheons, games, sports and more!
