Purpose/mission: The POWER (Providing Opportunities for Workforce Education Review) program at GTCC offers free courses to adults with intellectual disabilities who have the academic and adaptive skills to be successful in a college classroom setting. Our program is designed to increase reading, writing, math, computer literacy and workforce skills with a goal of further academic study and/or employment.

Population served: Students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Services/programs/resources offered:

• • POWER Classes: focused on improving basic reading, math, computer and writing skills, as well as employability skills and career preparation

  • POWER Pathways Classes: these courses give these students the skills to find meaningful career or volunteer opportunities, promoting self-sufficiency

    • • Our first POWER Pathway Program, Food Service, began Spring 2019. This program is offered on our Greensboro campus. The limit is 15 students!

    • • POWER Program: FREE

      • POWER Pathways Food Service Program: registration fee of $133; limited scholarships for those able to demonstrate financial need are available

  • Placement in the POWER program is dependent upon students achieving valid assessment scores on a TABE or CASAS test. Students may enroll at any time during the semester after scheduling an individual orientation and completing an assessment.

  • Students are expected to commit to attend at least 80% of your assigned class meeting times and to take periodic progress tests as required by the program for continued participation.
