Purpose/mission: The POWER (Providing Opportunities for Workforce Education Review) program at GTCC offers free courses to adults with intellectual disabilities who have the academic and adaptive skills to be successful in a college classroom setting. Our program is designed to increase reading, writing, math, computer literacy and workforce skills with a goal of further academic study and/or employment.
Population served: Students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Services/programs/resources offered:
POWER Classes: focused on improving basic reading, math, computer and writing skills, as well as employability skills and career preparation
POWER Pathways Classes: these courses give these students the skills to find meaningful career or volunteer opportunities, promoting self-sufficiency
Our first POWER Pathway Program, Food Service, began Spring 2019. This program is offered on our Greensboro campus. The limit is 15 students!

POWER Program: FREE
POWER Pathways Food Service Program: registration fee of $133; limited scholarships for those able to demonstrate financial need are available
Placement in the POWER program is dependent upon students achieving valid assessment scores on a TABE or CASAS test. Students may enroll at any time during the semester after scheduling an individual orientation and completing an assessment.
Students are expected to commit to attend at least 80% of your assigned class meeting times and to take periodic progress tests as required by the program for continued participation.
