Organization name: HEELS 2 Transition
Contact Person: Jacklyn Googins, Co-Coordinator
Purpose/mission:
HEELS 2 Transition is an interdisciplinary organization at UNC-Chapel Hill offering programs designed to address key areas of the transition to adulthood. HEELS 2 Transition aims to support neurodivergent individuals toward a self-determined and community engaged adult life.
Population served: Individuals with intellectual disabilities, age 18-26
Services/programs/resources offered:
HEELS Prep Online: A 7 week summer program that involves 3x/week skill-building instruction in the areas of self-management, life skills, career exploration, social planning, and community safety. In addition, participants meet weekly with a 1:1 coach to individualize and practically apply strategies introduced in class. The HEELS Prep Program is designed to support individuals age 18 to 26 with a diagnosis of ID, who are 1) interested in living and working in the community with more independence and 2) motivated to pursue their aspirations for adult life. The program will admit 10 participants for the Summer 2021 cohort.
HEELS UP: An abridged inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE) program to be piloted during Summer 2021. HEELS UP provides opportunities for young adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) to explore possibilities for adult life, pursue desired goals, and gain independence through inclusive social, academic, and work experiences. Participants will audit 1-2 college classes with coaching support as needed. Participants will receive a certificate (not a diploma) upon completion of the program. The program will admit 2 participants for the first cohort and eventually admit up to 8 participants. Detailed eligibility requirements will be released on the H2T website when available.
HEELS Bridge: This program will serve to “bridge” the transition to inclusive higher education settings, for those seeking enrollment in HEELS UP or other post-secondary education programs in North Carolina. It will cover foundational college readiness areas, such as navigating disability services, student roles/responsibilities, student wellness, self-advocacy, and social/campus life participation. Through an emphasis on access, self-determination, and self-directed exploration, the program prepares individuals to maximize the benefits of a college experience.
Costs/requirements to participate:
HEELS Bridge: TBD for Summer 2021
HEELS Prep Online: TBD for Summer 2021
HEELS UP: Participants will pay regular UNC tuition and fees. Scholarship opportunities may become available.
