Human Rights

In this unit we will be thinking about human rights. What are our basic rights? How are they protected? How are they violated?

Second Presentation

You can choose any topic related to human rights. We will present December 6th.

Week 8 (11/15)

Today:

  • vocabulary quiz
  • Think and discuss 1) a bit more about immigration, and 2) about animal rights
  • Plan your 2nd presentation topic

For next time:

  • Start researching and making your 2nd presentation. If you want me to check your talk or your slides, please email me.
  • Post about your 2nd presentation topic on the Discussion Forum. What topic did you choose? Why? What do you plan to say about the topic (a simple preview)?

Week 7 (11/8)

Today:

  • vocabulary quiz
  • Think about the issue of immigration (worksheet)

For next week:

  • Catch up on DF postings. For the post about your first presentation, you can write it as a summary of your talk.
  • Choose a topic for your second presentation. Note that if you prepare your presentation early, I can check it for you and give you advice for improving it.

Week 6 (11/1)

Today:

  • We will take the vocabulary quiz
  • We will start to think and discuss about human rights related issues.

For next week:

  • find and read an article about a human rights violation (in English or in your language) and introduce/summarize it in the Discussion Forum

Conflict & Violence

We are going to start by looking at conflict and violence. Why do people hurt each other? Why do we make weapons and fight wars?

First Presentation

The first presentation will be on a topic of your choice related to this theme. You need to do enough research so that you can teach us something we don't already know about your topic. We will present on October 25th. You need to prepare slides and and a talk of about 5 minutes (or longer if you want).

Week 5 (10/25)

Today:

  • We will take the vocabulary quiz
  • You will present for each other several times. After each presentation, please write reflections.

Week 4 (10/18)

Today:

  • We will take the vocabulary quiz
  • I will give a little presentation about This Is America and we'll think about how to make an effective presentation
  • You will start preparing your presentations for next week

For next week:

  • Finish preparing your presentation and PRACTICE!! You want to speak smoothly and naturally. Ideally you will NOT just read from your notes.

Week 3 (10/11)

Today we will:

  • Take the vocabulary quiz.
  • Finish preparing your group mini-presentations on This Is America and present them
  • Start to plan your first presentation

For next week:

  • Catch up with posting in the Discussion Forum and also comment on a few classmates' posts.
  • Start researching and preparing your presentation.

Week 2 (10/4)

Today we will:

  • Take the vocabulary quiz.
  • Watch a music video and discuss it.
  • If there is time, discuss violence in general and brainstorm research questions.

For next week:

  • Write your self-introduction if you haven't yet.
  • Choose a topic (related to Conflict & Violence) for your first presentation. Start doing a little research, and post something about your topic in the Discussion Forum.

Week 1 (9/27)

Today we will:

  • Go over the course outline, join the Discussion Forum, and look at the vocabulary lists.
  • Meet a classmate and then introduce them to the class.
  • Brainstorm about social issues (shared folder).
  • Watch a music video and discuss it.

For next week:

  • Introduce yourself in the Discussion Forum and tell us about one or more social issue that you are concerned about.
  • Study the word list. We'll have our first quiz next week.
