This course will focus on enhancing and developing students’ English skills toward the end product of a student newspaper. Students will study rhetoric, journalistic style and conventions, page design, interviewing, and the responsibility that comes with being a journalist. We will make use of Google Docs and Classroom, Adobe Indesign and Photoshop, as well as, Apple GarageBand and iMovie. Skills in the use of these programs are desired, but not essential. This class will on occasion require work outside of class time.

Yearbook Staff is a class that creates, produces, sells, and distributes the schools’ yearbook. Developed skills in photography, Photo Shop or in design are desired, but not required. Students are held accountable for daily attendance and for participation in events outside of class such as athletic activities and games, rallies, and drama or band performances at lunch or after school. Scheduled editing time after school is also required.
Students will build upon skills in English II and utilize StudySync through a consumable textbook and online platform to access a variety of literary genres such as short stories, speeches, poetry, informational texts, excerpts from novels, etc. Students will work closely with the literature through annotations, close reading, critical thinking, analytical questions, and writing prompts. There will also be vocabulary, grammar, research skills, and full length novels included throughout the course.
This course is designed to support English Learners in all of their courses. Students will work on organization, writing, critical thinking skills, and literacy skills that will help support them in all of their classes.
