Brain Breaks
I recently presented "Navigating AI with Integrity" at SGVCUE, and I've attached the slide deck for your reference. For this month's podcast, I took the lazy route... I mean, I strategically employed NotebookLM to transform my slides into a conversational audio overview. The irony isn't lost on me: using AI to talk about using AI responsibly. Here's the thing: learning to use AI with integrity is like learning to eat healthy or floss daily. We know what we should do, but it takes real discipline and guidance to follow through, especially when the shortcut is right there. At ABC, we've developed principles, guidelines, and practical tools to help students navigate these choices, because let's be honest: if it were easy to do the right thing when technology offers us the easy thing, we wouldn't need workshops like the one I hosted. Just like building any worthwhile skill, it feels like extra work and extra time until it becomes second nature. It may take some time, but our students can get there (and some already have).
Here are a few Guided Activity ideas for February you can remix to honor student voice, identity, gratitude, and community. For best results, copy and paste this link using your .org domain. This makes it easier to remix (if needed) and share with your students through Google Classroom.
Black History Month

Those fidgety behaviors, bathroom requests, and off-task moments aren't defiance, they're your students' brains literally begging for what they need. Brain breaks aren't a luxury or a reward for good behavior; they're a biological necessity for learning. And with technology and AI, you can create engaging, content-connected breaks that take zero prep time.
What the Research Actually Says:
The science on brain breaks is stunning. Studies show that for every hour later in the day, test performance decreases by 0.9% of a standard deviation—roughly equivalent to losing 10 school days' worth of learning. However, incorporating 20-30 minute breaks not only eliminated this decrease but actually increased performance.
