Additional Online Resources

Here are some resources that can be used with young people as extra activities from the CGS Curriculum, as well as for younger ages. If you need any assistance with them, or have any other questions, please email me and I'll get back to you when I can .

Ages & stages are suggestions - usually from the creator of the resource - and will not be universal...

Google Chrome Music Lab (only available on Chrome Browser) - is a whole suite of intuitive online-based apps for creating sounds and music. For all ages and stages.

Sampulator - Music production made easy. Create beats in your browser. Aimed at older children and adults - you use the keyboard on your computer to trigger the sounds, then record layers on top of each other to create short loops & beats.

Treble Clef is a visual / listening game where you see & hear the note on the treble stave, then identify it. Perfect to practice the notes and an ideal task for someone new to reading music notation.

Storm Chasers is an listening game to identify the direction of the notes - ideal to work on early primary listening skills.


Melody Mayhem is a short game to work on listening skills and identify the written notation. It's for slightly older primary pupils who can read the treble clef confidently.

Google Chrome Music Lab RHYTHM (only available on Chrome Browser) is a Rhythm sequencer where you set the pattern and listen back as you change it. There are a few different sounds available and the rhythms can all be built up to three layers. Suitable for all ages. **We'll be back to the Music Lab next week...

Flying Instruments is a Tetris-like game with three levels–matching by instrument family, by instrument, and by sound. This is probably best for older Primary-aged children with a good ear and memory for sounds - although any primary age would be fine.

Orchestra Game asks you to listen and identify the instrument played, there's then a nice animated video showing what instruments are being used during the playback. Aimed at Primary-aged children.

DRUMBIT is a web based drum machine - compatible with all modern browsers. It aims to be a very easy to use drum machine, offering means to put together a drum beat very quickly and in a very intuitive way. P5 - S4 could use this if interested in making their own beats, choosing / editing the sounds they want.

BeepBox - is an online tool for sketching and sharing instrumental melodies. Using 8-bit sounds and samples to create music like what you'd hear in old arcade games.

It's a bit more complicated to use that the DRUMBIT machine above so more for Secondary age pupils.

Oval Synth (iPad / iPhone) - is a music, synthesis and effects platform designed for music creation, learning and live performance. Loads of crazy sounds and almost instantly adictive to find a groove you like. Ideal for all ages - even adults.

BBC Ten Pieces is aimed at pupils from P5 - S2. With lots of videos and included tasks it is a large resource which can be used to introduce young listeners to all sorts of orchestral music.

Bring The Noise PLAY IT! is aimed at Primary pupils - exploring the different elements that make up a song. Play or clap along with the music or make and listen back to your own version of songs.

BBC Teach Nursery Rhymes & Songs is for Nursery and Early Years and has animations of some of the best-known traditional nursery rhymes, many sung by BBC Children's TV presenters, with music that your children will love! They're an ideal resource to support a range of Early Years objectives from home.

Incredibox is a music app for all ages - even adults - that lets you create your own music with the help of a merry crew of beatboxers. Choose your musical style from the different atmospheres and start to lay down, record and share your mix.
