Sacrament of Confirmation

Confirmation example of previous years.

St Mary’s Cathedral, Huntly Street, Aberdeen

Photographs

Please feel free to take your own photos after the ceremony.

Appropriate clothing

This is a very special day and we appreciate that much thought goes into how your child is presented on the day. For girls a smart dress (not necessarily white) and for boys a kilt/shirt and tie are appropriate. Please make sure it is decent and appropriate for church.

Prayerful service

It is sometimes tempting to lose sight of the true meaning of the sacrament amongst the excitement and activities of the day. We ask that you perhaps spend some quiet, calm time prior to the service encouraging your child to think and reflect. Please be respectful and mindful of this while taking photographs in the church.

Receiving the sacrament

The confirmandi will be seated with their families and will be called up with their sponsor to the altar, following the homily.

At Communion time, anyone wishing a blessing can come up with their hands crossed over their chest when they approach the priest. We will have a rehearsal at the Cathedral on Tuesday 8th June at 10am.

Seating and Numbers

Each family will have a pew allocated. Your child’s name will be on the end of the pew, next to where they should sit. Their sponsor should sit beside them. If you have more family members, they can sit alongside your pew to the right or left, into the side altar pews.

For 2 meters social distancing the current Cathedral seating is:

  • 14 large/household benches for 3 to 6 people = 42 to 84 people

  • 21 small couple benches = 42 people

  • 11 small single benches + 9 seats at Lady Altar = 20 people

TOTAL: 102 to 146 people

The couple and single benches can be interchanged according to our needs. We have yet to see how many of each we will actually need.

So, there are 14 main benches. Down the centre aisle. Other confirmandi will then have to be seated on the other smaller benches at the side aisles.

We look forward to a happy and holy day for all.
