Laboratory Science

Course Overview

The course is split into seven Units: 

1. Health and Safety 

2. Electricity 

3. Radioactivity 

4. Kitchen Chemistry 

5. Pandemic (Microbiology) 

6. Practical Investigation 

7. Careers 

During the course, you will build a wide range of Technical Knowledge and Practical Skills across all three Sciences. 

The majority of the course involves learning through hands-on practical work. This course is linked to RGU, Aberdeen University, the Rowett Institute and various local businesses. These links are integrated throughout the course, offering experiments which would not be possible within a school laboratory. Class visits are spread throughout the year, along with visits to the school. 

Learning and Teaching Approaches

The Laboratory Science Course is designed to introduce you to the knowledge and skills required for employment in a wide range of industries and services with laboratory science requirements. Examples include work in oil and gas, ROV design, the NHS, food and drink manufacture, research institutes, water authorities, public analysts, education, and more! 

Throughout the course you will undertake a broad range of advanced laboratory techniques, deploying modern analytical instruments and methods similar to those used in modern commercial laboratories. Within this course you will also explore a variety of industries and career opportunities, and evaluate and develop your own employability skills. The development of team working skills will also feature strongly in the program. 

Homework

You will receive regular homework. This might involve completing or redrafting class work, researching a topic, preparing talks or presentations. 

Assessment Approaches

To achieve the full qualification you must attend regularly and successfully complete all four units. Good attendance for this course is a must. Assessment will be carried out through a range of methods, including practical activities, reports and presentations supported by assessor observation checklists as well as self- evaluation. 

On successful completion of the full group award your SQA Exam Certificate will show a National 5 qualification.
