Course Overview
MIGRATION AND EMPIRE 1830-1939
Take a journey through the fascinating time of exploration and Empire. We will uncover in more depth the experience of immigrants in Scotland and join the Scots as they take their chances in the New World. Will they become as successful as Andrew Carnegie, the steel tycoon and richest man on Earth? Or will they once again find themselves in poverty and disrepute, thousands of miles from home.
BRITAIN 1851-1951
Explore a phenomenal century of social, economic and political upheaval in Britain. A century of radical ideas, extreme poverty and explosive events that forged the modern British belief of the rights to vote, healthcare, education and social welfare. Uncover the actions of the militant Suffragettes as they take the campaign for women’s suffrage straight to Parliament. Meet the radical New Liberal government led by Asquith, Lloyd-George and Churchill as they push through a range of policies to support the poorest in Britain for the very first time. Finally, take a look at the first Labour Government in 1945 and how they set about radical social change in the aftermath of World War II.
USA 1918-1968
The early decades of the twentieth century in America were a time of prejudice, fear, boom, bust, hopes, and dreams. In many ways, the American story between 1918 and 1968 defined the direction of the modern world. In this unit, we will explore attitudes toward immigration in the 1920s, the obstacles to equal rights for Black Americans, the Wall Street crash of 1929, and the story of Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Campaign.
