Course Overview
The Higher Biology course builds on the content of previous scientific learning and in particular upon the National 5 Biology course. In addition to the biology content students will also develop the key skills of scientific inquiry, investigation and analytical thinking, along with the application of knowledge and understanding in relevant contexts. Students will also develop an understanding of the role of biology in society and the environment.
The course is divided into three units and a Researching Biology section as described below:
DNA and the Genome: This unit covers the key areas of structure and replication of DNA, gene expression and the genome.
Metabolism and Survival: This unit covers the key areas of metabolism being essential for life, maintaining metabolism, and metabolism in microorganisms.
Sustainabilty and Interdependence: The Unit covers the key areas of the science of food production, interrelationships and dependence, and biodiversity.
Researching Biology: Developing the essential skills for carrying out investigative, scientific research In biology, and applying these in the context of a topical biology investigation.
Homework
Regular homework will be given to consolidate class work, develop problem solving skills and help with revision.
Assessment Approaches
Course assessment at Higher:
An investigation report 30 marks, scaled to 40 (25% of mark)
Question paper: 100 marks, scaled to 120
