Course Overview
The Higher Applications of Mathematics course focuses on developing the mathematical and analytical skills required in society and for the future workforce. The course develops candidates’ quantitative and mathematical literacy, problem-solving skills and reasoning skills as they apply mathematics in real-life contexts. The skills, knowledge and understanding in the course supports a wide range of curricular areas, such as humanities, social sciences, healthcare, and business.
The course is broken into the following key areas:
Mathematical Modelling
Understanding and applying the process of mathematical modelling to evaluate, analyse and interpret mathematical models including using software effectively in calculations.
Statistics and Probablity
Applying statistical skills to basic probability and data analysis, interpretation and communication. It will introduce students to correlation and linear regression.
Finance
Applying mathematical skills to calculating present and future values of monetary payments and to solving problems related to personal financial products and transactions and analysing the results.
Planning and Decision Making
Understanding and applying project planning and decision making.
Homework
Regular homework will be given to consolidate class work, develop problem solving skills and help with revision. There should be an expectation that there will be homework after every lesson which will consist of finishing off class tasks. There will also be regular mixed topic exercises.
Assessment Approaches
Course assessment at Higher:
Component 1: Question paper - 80 marks - 2 hours 30 minutes
Component 2: Project - 30 marks - 8 hours
