National 4/5
Course Overview
National 4 / 5 Practical woodworking skills course will build on a range of practical skills, knowledge and processes to complete a variety of models. The course allows pupils to work at the appropriate level of either National 4 or 5 and is differentiated through the wood joints completed on similar models.
There are 3 units in the course:
Carcase frame
Flat frame
Machining and Finishing
This course gives pupils the opportunity to work on practical activities to enhance their accuracy in measuring and marking out, refining their fine motor skills. It also gives them practical skills in a range of hand/power tools and processes which may support them in the career path in the future, or develop their life skills. Pupils will work independently from reading the drawing to the finished product. Pupils are encouraged to support their peers and offer constructive feedback which helps to embed their own understanding of the processes.
Learning and Teaching Approaches
Pupils begin the course by completing a variety of practice wood joints, allowing them to build on their skill of reading working drawings, using the appropriate tools correctly and become more confident in their independent working. There will be a number of teacher led demonstrations to allow for new tools and processes to be shared, with this reducing as the course continues.
Pupils will be responsible for the tools in the classroom, working with others at their bench to share, as well as the care and maintenance of hand tools.
Pupils are encouraged to use IT to complete any theory work, these facilities are available in the department.
Homework
Homework may be used at appropriate stages to help reinforce pupils’ knowledge and understanding of tools and processes. It will benefit pupils to fill in log books whilst the information is fresh in their memory and they will be encouraged to keep these up to date out-with class time.
