National 4/5
In the National 4 / 5 Graphic Communication course pupils will learn to communicate ideas graphically using a range of manual and electronic methods. They will also develop their special awareness, interpreting graphics and applying a range of standards and protocols. The course allows pupils to work at the appropriate level of either National 4 or 5 and is differentiated through the outcome, as well as the level of support required.
There are 2 units in the course:
§ 2D Graphic Communication
§ 3D and Pictorial Graphic Communication
The 3 types of Graphics studied are;
· Preliminary
· Production
· Promotional
This course gives pupils the opportunity to work on smaller projects, learning how to use the skills, techniques and software. As their confidence and skills develop, pupils are then given the opportunity to work on more challenging projects which run along a thematic theme. Pupils will work independently from reading the given brief, completing the steps from initial stages and ideas to completed working drawings, sketches or desktop published items. Pupils are encouraged to support their peers and offer constructive feedback which helps to embed their own understanding of the processes.
Learning and Teaching Approaches
Pupils begin the course by completing a variety of tasks to enable them to become familiar with the software, building their knowledge of the tools that can be applied and then demonstrating these skills in more complex projects when ready. Pupils will also work on a range of techniques to enhance their freehand sketching skills – these essential skills cover multiple areas of the course. Pupils will analyse the use of Design Elements and Principles from a variety of media, then applying these themselves, justifying their choices. Pupils will learn how to 3D model individual components, then creating the required drawings needed including Orthographics, Assembly, Exploded, Sectional and Pictorial drawings. They will also learn how to apply materials and lighting to render these Models effectively.
There will be a number of teacher led demonstrations to allow for new sills and processes to be shared, with this reducing as the course continues.
Pupils will be responsible for their own resources in the classroom, working independently, as well as the use of ICT.
Pupils are encouraged to access IT out with class to complete any theory work, revision, or outstanding work. These facilities are available in the department through prior arrangement.
Homework
Homework may be used at appropriate stages to help reinforce pupils’ knowledge and understanding in the subject and are encouraged to practice their freehand sketching throughout the course. Creating a study guide and revision notes as they go is also encouraged.
