In S3 Geography we continue exploring the world by looking at Physical and Human Environments, as well as exploring the Global Issues that threaten millions of people every day. Topics include:
Dark Tourism - Would you visit a site where the darkest moments in history took place? We look at the motivations to go and the social, economic and environmental effects this has on the area.
Awesome Oceans – From our coastlines to the deepest depths and the coral reefs and in between, this topic explores all things oceans and the threats they face from human destruction.
People on the Move – Are we facing a population catastrophe and why do some countries seem to have it sussed when it comes to development? After delving into these issues, we’ll look at case studies of people who move around the world and the reasons behind these voluntary or forced migrations.
Agriculture – From self-driving tractors, to stealing bees to help pollinate British crops. What are the new technologies of British farming and what impacts do these advancements have on our environment?
Rivers – In this Physical Geography topic we will explore and explain the formation of river features and the deadly impacts rivers can have whilst shaping our earth.
Learning and Teaching Approaches
Due to its breadth and diversity, Geography is unique in building up-to-date skills, which will be taught to you in variety of ways e.g. interpreting maps and diagrams, PowerPoint presentations, independent internet research and relevant documentaries. Your will have clear targets set and the work will be at an appropriate level to you.
Homework
Occasional homework will be given to help build on new concepts we cover in class. This will always be with purpose and designed to deepen your understanding of the world around you.
Assessment Approaches
Assessment will take place both formally and informally throughout the course. This means evidence on how you are progressing will be collected throughout each unit in a variety of ways e.g. research work, presentation work, homework as well as formal assessments where some questions will test your knowledge of the subject; others will test the skills you have developed in the unit.
