Course Overview
S3 coursework is designed to ensure that all pupils develop a strong platform for later learning and for successful transition to qualifications at the appropriate level. Smoothly building on skills and experiences from S1&2, courses are process based so that pupils gain confidence in using creative and problem solving skills. The course has built in flexibility to offer excellent articulation and relevance while still retaining an element of personal choice and selection. As pupils progress the level of choice. Chemistry is the study of chemicals, their properties, origins and uses. The level 4 Chemistry course builds on the knowledge and skills gained in the S1/2 Science course. You will develop an understanding of Planet Earth and Materials which includes the following topics:
Chemical Reactions - in the laboratory and in the environment.
Fuels - their formation, importance and impact on our lives.
The Atom - structure and bonding.
Learning and Teaching Approaches
Chemistry lessons include learning through experiments and investigations, demonstrations, presentations, research, group work, active learning tasks, problem solving and note-taking.
Homework
Regular homework will be given to consolidate class work, develop problem solving skills and help with revision.
Assessment Appraoches
There will be formal (written tests) at the end of each unit testing knowledge and understanding and problem solving skills. Pupils will be assessed on their practical skills and abilities to design and carry out experiments. There will also be ongoing assessments of performance in group work, presentation skills and research skills.
