The specific aim of the National Progression Award in Art and Design at level 5 is to provide a structured award that creates opportunities for candidates to gain practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of a arnge of printmaking. mixed media and illustration skills and techniques for art and design applications. Candidates will develop skills in printmaking through practical experimentation. They will also investigate mixed media techniques in a design context prior to creating a finished illustration in response to a design brief.
This course requires pupils to utilise communication skills, problem solving skills and to work with others.
This course is suitable for pupis who:
want to investigate mixed media and design ideas
are interested in mark-making and manipulation techniques
wish to develop printmaking skills for art and design applications
wish to develop basic knowledge and skills in the use of techniques and media for illustration

Assessment Methods - 3 Mandatory units internally assessed
Design Studies : Introductio to Mixed Media
Pupils investigate selected mixed media materials and tools, apply markmaking and manipulation techniques then present design ideas in mixed media.
Art and Design : Printmaking
Pupils will produce a range of experimental prints, prior to refining and producing final prints.
Art and Design : Introduction to Illustration
Pupils will research a given brief in illustration. They will then develop initial ideas for illustration in response to the brief prior to completing final illustration.
The courses will employ a pupil-centered approach and active learning will be promoted at all stages. Pupils will work to a brief during which time they will be encouraged to be reflective and develop their own style. The teacher will drive some of the activities but there will be ample opportunity for pupils to independently apply their own learning.
