Financial Aid is money that is given or lended to you to pay for college.
Grants
Don't need to be paid back
Most often, Grants are awarded based on need. They are usually given based on your family's financial circumstances.
Come from federal and state governments and from colleges.
Scholarships
Don't need to be paid back.
May be awarded based on a number of reasons, such as academic merit, athletic ability, interest in a program/subject, and volunteer work.
Come from colleges, private organizations, governments.
AAPS offers local scholarships (only available to AAPS students)
Loans
Loans are money that is borrowed and must be paid back with interest.
The federal government offers low-interest loans to students with financial need.
Other lenders offer loans that charge more interest.
Work Study
The Federal Work-Study Program offers paid part-time jobs to help students pay for a portion of their college cost.
Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) makes you eligible to be considered for the greatest amount of financial aid from the federal government, state governments and many colleges.
The FAFSA is key to being considered for most types of aid: grants, scholarships, work-study and loans.
This year the FAFSA opens to seniors in December (the year before they plan to go to college). Try to file your FAFSA as soon as possible, as financial aid funds are limited, and in many cases are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline for completing the FAFSA is March 1st.
