Volunteer!

Help students at the Ann Arbor Public Schools who are joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week.

Become a Tech-a-teer during the Hour of Code at AAPS!

Tech-a-teers volunteer for at least an hour in an AAPS classroom during the Hour of Code at AAPS (Dec 9-13, 2019).

As a Tech-a-teer, you will have a chance to help students as they work on a coding activity (provided by a teacher), speak to students about your field and see the cool things we are doing at AAPS around tech!

We are particularly interested in bringing in Tech-a-Teers who can show our students that anyone can have a career in tech, including women and people of color.

Volunteer with Hour of Code

Who Can Volunteer for the Hour of Code at AAPS?

Anyone can volunteer as a Tech-a-teer during the Hour of Code at AAPS! Depending on the classroom, volunteers can range from someone who has no coding experience to a person who does coding and programming for a living.

Since this event coincides with Computer Science Education Week, we are looking for Tech-a-Teers who represent a field in Computer Science including IT, Systems and Database Administration, App and Website Design and more.

For Elementary students, the important part is that you are enthusiastic, curious and ready to assist in the classroom as needed.

Our preference for Middle and High School volunteers is that you have some experience with coding or programming and can share that knowledge with students.

We are especially interested in volunteers who can provide a diverse representation of the types of people that can get a job in coding and programming, including women and people of color.

What is the Volunteer Commitment?

Volunteer shifts vary from as little as an hour to as much as you want! This does not include transportation time, so please factor in travel time when you sign up. You are also welcome to volunteer for more than one shift.

What are the Volunteer Opportunities During Hour of Code?

There are a variety of different volunteer opportunities for the Hour of Code:

Assisting in the Classroom with a Coding Activity, Talking About Your Job/Role

At the Elementary Schools, we need volunteers who can assist students with a coding activity, share for 5-10 mins about their job field to inspire the students and help give out stickers and certificates. We will provide you with questions ahead of time as well as other activities you can do while a volunteer in the classroom.

Speaking to a Classroom About Your Coding or Programming Career

At the K-8, Middle, and High Schools, you will still be on hand to assist the classroom as needed in the coding activity. In addition, we would like you to take some time (10-15 minutes) to talk to the students about your career or experience in IT/Computer Science or a related field. Bring visual aids, share a fun story and give the students a chance to answer questions. We will help by providing you with questions ahead of time!

What Does "Coding Experience Preferred" Mean?

On the sign-up form your will see the phrase "Coding experience preferred" in some slots. This means the school is looking for someone who works in the computer science/IT field or has experience with coding. This could mean a number of things, from building a website, to creating a program or app, to database administration, to more. If you are unsure if you have the type of experience suited for the opportunity, please email us at partners@a2schools.org.

Sign up for a Volunteer Shift!

Volunteer sign up will be live in the Fall. In the meantime, you can fill out our Volunteer Interest Form.
