Canvas has two main ways to get around: global navigation and course navigation. Global navigation helps you access tools across Canvas, while course navigation helps you find materials and activities inside each class.
🔑 Key tools you’ll see on this page include the Dashboard, Calendar, Home Page, Modules, To Do list, and Global Navigation menu.
📺 While watching a video on this page, you can turn on closed captions, slow down or speed up the video, and read along using the transcript anytime.
The Dashboard is the first thing you will see when you log into Canvas. The Dashboard helps you see what is happening in all your current courses.
You can return to your User Dashboard at any time by selecting the Dashboard link in Global Navigation.
The Canvas Calendar helps you see everything you need to do for all your classes in one place. You can switch between daily, weekly, monthly, or agenda views to see your schedule in the way that works best for you.
Each class appears in a different color to help you stay organized. You can choose which classes show on your calendar by clicking the colored square next to a class name. When a class is turned off, it fades and its events are hidden.
Students can also add their own events to their personal calendar (the one with your name). This includes reminders, repeating events, and to‑do items to help you keep track of important tasks.
On your Dashboard, the right side of the screen is called the sidebar. One of the most important parts of the sidebar is the To Do List.
The To Do List helps you keep track of assignments and tasks from all of your classes, along with their due dates. Checking it often can help you stay organized and know what needs to be worked on next.
The sidebar may also show upcoming events, such as quizzes or class activities, so you always know what’s coming up.
When you open a class, you’ll see a similar sidebar on the right side of the screen that shows a To Do List and upcoming items for that class only.
When you open a Canvas course, you land on the Course Home Page. This page is your starting point for the class and may include announcements, your To Do list, and links to important course content and activities your teacher wants you to focus on.
Modules are where you’ll find your teacher’s course content and assignments. Your teacher may organize modules by time (such as weekly units) or by topic.
Each module can contain different types of items, such as Pages, Assignments, Quizzes, Discussions, or Links. An icon next to each item’s title shows you what type of item it is.
On the Modules page, you can use the Expand All / Collapse All button at the top of the screen to open or close all modules at once, or click on an individual module title to expand or collapse it.
Microsoft Immersive Reader helps make reading easier and more accessible for all students. It can read text out loud, highlight words, and help you understand what you’re reading. You can use Immersive Reader on the Course Home Page and when viewing an assignment or page.
