Musicians' masks
Musicians' masks
are special face masks that may protect other people in the room from germs that the BAND player may have while still allowing a person to play. As of June, 2022, it has not officially been determined whether these will be required materials for the 2022-23 school year. There are many different styles of musicians' masks. At this time, the school system does not regulate type. It is unclear whether any of the different options offer more protection than others. Below are Mrs. Dickinson's opinions on the ease of use for some of the different styles in case you wish to purchase materials for your musician. (Wind instruments include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, & baritone.)
Flute players' mask: One of only two styles that will work for flute players. Wash/ swap out each week at a minimum.
Long overhang: Easiest for all woodwind instruments. Second option for flute players. More readily available on sites like Etsy or making at home. Wash/ swap out each week at a minimum.
Magnetized split mask: Easier for young players. Wash/ swap out each week at a minimum.
Overlapped mask: Fairly easy for brass players to work with. Works for clarinet and saxophone as well with some effort. Wash/ swap out each week at a minimum.
Magnetized flap mask: Works for all wind instruments except flute. Wash/ swap out each week at a minimum.
Instrument Bell covers are a face mask for your instrument. They trap most harmful particles from going into the air to protect other people in the room with you. There are some with filters and some without. Even 3 layers of panty-hose rubber banded over the end of your instrument works! Wash/ swap out each week at a minimum.
