Wednesday, October 3, 2016The Zeeland water polo team defeated East Grand Rapids by a score of 11-7. The Pioneers came ready to play and forced overtime with both teams tied at seven as regulation time expired. Ben Thomas dominated overtime, scoring three of his four goals in extra time. The team also had four players with at least five steals: Ben Thomas, Travis Engelsman, Philip DeJonge and Austin Mills.

The Zeeland East and West water polo team lost to Hudsonville Monday night, 7-3. Despite a great defensive effort by the team, which included a total of twenty-five steals, Zeeland was unable to generate enough offense to match the Eagles. Ben Thomas led the team in steals with ten. Zeeland's biggest goal came from Jonathan Kollen who scored on a man advantage right before halftime.
Zeeland plays on Wednesday versus East Grand Rapids and has their next district match up versus West Ottawa on Monday.

The Zeeland Men's water polo team defeated Jenison by a score of 10-4. It was a balanced attack with Ben Thomas, Gabe Trevino and Travis Engelsman each scoring three goals. Travis played great earning three assists, seven steals and two field blocks. However, the biggest key to the game was Zeeland's combined effort on defense. There were a total of twenty steals, five field blocks and only allowed ten shots on goal.
Zeeland will play this weekend at the Birmingham tournament. On Monday they play in a pivotal district match up versus Hudsonville.
The JV team faced Jenison. After the first quarter it was a close game with Jenison up by one. The second period turned out to be the downfall of the match with Jenison scoring four goals, while Zeeland was unable to get one. Zeeland defensively was able to get 14 steals as a team with Brandon Kraai having five of those. Offensively Tucker DeGraaf led the team with two goals. Brandon Johnson also added two and Kaleb DeNeff had a last second hook shot that caught the goalie unaware and scored from eight meters out. In goal Evan Potter had five saves. It was a tough loss to the Wildcats and leaves the team at 0-2 in the district, and 5-5-1 overall.

The varsity water polo team lost to the Rockford Rams, 14-7, on Monday night. Zeeland was tied with the number-one ranked Rams midway through the third, but Rockford's six-on-five offense proved to be the deciding factor late in the game. Zeeland's offense was led by Gabe Trevino, Travis Engelsman and Austin Mills. These three accounted for every goal, five assists, and three drawn exclusions. Jonathan Kollen defensively came up big with three steals. And making one of the biggest impacts in the pool, but not the stat sheet, was Jon Michael Hoeve. Playing out of position, he was able to shut down some of the best hole sets in the state.
Zeeland plays next on Wednesday versus district opponent, Jenison. This game will impact post-season placement, so let's get a crowd to make the trip. Go Z!
