Tulip Time and Memorial Day 2017

Tulip Time  - 7th and 8th grade only

     May 10 & 11

The parade starts at 2:00.  We will be back to school between 3:15 and 4:30 depending on where we are in the lineup.

 A couple of reminders:

  1. Students have a half day of school and will be dismissed at 10:45 both days.  Students and parents are then responsible for lunch plans.  You may decide whether they go home, to a friend’s house, or downtown.  Students will not be allowed in the building.
  1. Students need to be back to the Cityside band room at 12:30.  Busses will leave for the parade at 12:45.
  1. ALL STUDENTS MUST RIDE THE BUSSES TO THE PARADE.  Students may do one of the following at the end of the parade:
    1. Ride the bus back to school where you will either walk home or be picked up by a parent (no note needed).
    2. Get picked up at the end of the parade by a parent. I must have a note in advance saying that you are leaving with your parent (The parade ends at the corner of 11th and VanRaalte). Parents must be present at the end to check out their son or daughter.  Students are not allowed to walk back on the parade route to find or meet a parent.  Students are allowed to go home with another parent as long as both parents consent to the plan.  I must have a note from both parents consenting to the plan before the day of the parade. This allows me to plan bussing and have an accurate list for attendance. I have to be a stickler about this because of safety concerns.  I will not allow a student to leave without written notice.  If for some reason a parent does not meet us at the end of the parade, I will take the student back to Cityside on the bus.

***Cancellation Policy:  Wednesday’s parade will not be made up if it is cancelled for bad weather.  Thursday’s parade would move to Friday. Cancellation is not a decision made by us. It is usually a last minute decision made by the Tulip Time organizers.  We may not even know until we get there.

Memorial Day Parade - 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade

May 29

The parade will begin at 9:00 A.M. from Cityside Middle School. All band students will need to meet on the grass in front of Cityside by 8:40 AM (Main Street). Be aware that the streets are often closed by 8:15, so leave plenty of time to arrive on time. We will all meet together for attendance.  All students must be in uniform including solid black shoes and socks. Slipper shoes, flip flops, heels, or backless clogs will not be appropriate and will cause major foot issues. Students may decorate their instrument with one item of patriotism, including a small flag, red/white/blue streamers, or ribbon would be appropriate. Parents, please help monitor this so that we still look respectful as we remember those who have died for our country. Students may wear red/white/blue ribbons in their hair, but not color their hair or wear hats. Students may wear sunglasses.

If your child needs to get an instrument that morning (all percussion, tubas, and others) the Cityside band room will be open from 8:15 – 8:25.  Please plan on picking up your instrument during that time. After the parade, the band room will be opened again so that you can drop it off.  If you would rather drop it off on Tuesday morning that would be fine too.

At the end of the parade please designate a meeting area for your family. There will be over 700 ZPS students marching in this parade and things will be simpler if you have a meeting place picked out in advance. I do not need any notes from parents for this parade. When we reach the end I will dismiss them to you.

If your child will be unable to attend this parade, I need a note from a parent by Monday, May 22nd in order for it to be excused.  Students that are excused can make up the assignment by writing a paper and playing a quiz.  Students that are unexcused can not make up the points.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
