Amazon Dispatching Monks to Ceremonies

In Japan where social roles of local Buddhist temples and the ties with the local community are fading, people in recent years question the costly funerals and the related ceremonies provided by Buddhist temples.

According to Japan Consumers’ Association, the funerals and related services cost average JPY2 million (YR2010), including funeral related fees and catering to attendants and monks. The prices depend on the size, but most services keep their pricing unclear..

In recent years, there is a trend that people become more practical and spend less in the face of an aging society. An increasing number of funerals are carried entirely by the next of kindred.

Many temples are losing offerings and memberships or suppers in their communities, which have been the main source of income.  In fact, many Japanese do not have ties with temples in our everyday lives and have no idea how to arrange Buddhist rituals.

Under such circumstances, many industries including IT, Retail, Railway and more are entering into the funeral services, to provide more simple and clear pricing system and convenience.  Even the “Drive-through” services are available.

When Amazon Japan allowed a provider to offer “Monk Delivery Services”, the Japan Buddhist Association criticized Amazon of commercializing religion. Nevertheless, many people look to welcome the Amazon’s practical approach with its clear pricing scheme.

Japan’s 77,000 temples are our rich cultural assets, but some failed to cater to the needs.  They should have major roles in our society by providing spiritual support in an increasing complex society.
