Financial Literacy Education Project,
 An Eagle Scout Service Project, By Dan Ta - Troop 1930 - El Capitan District - Orange County Council

Project Summary  Provide Financial Literacy Education to high school students. The project consists of two phases. The first phase is the creation of a High School Financial Literacy Club, to act as the support foundation for the second phase, a multi-high school Financial Literacy Event. The club was established in September 2014 and was strong enough to help organize the multi-high school Financial Literacy Event that took place a year later.  The New Gen Financial Literacy event was held on Nov 19, 2015  with 700 students/staff in the audience. The event featured California State Treasurer, John Chiang and other VIPs to underline the importance of the Financial Literacy message. Youtube of the event ensures the Financial Literacy message to continue to spread and inspire.

Effort  From March. 2014 through Nov 2015, approximately 861 hours of work between Dan Ta and 35 to 40 people who were involved in the project at various levels and phases, not counting the time spent after 11/19/2015 .

Project Phase 1 - PENNY WISE CLUB (9/2014 - Present and Beyond)

  • Founded and ran a sustainable Penny Wise Club. Members of the club helped  support  the organization of the Financial Literacy Event

  • Recruited 25 active members

  • Led club members in 2 Stock Competitions, 2014, 2015

  • Conducted 40 weekly half-hour Club meetings involving Financial Literacy Concepts and planning. Each meeting requires 2 to 3 hours of preparation time

  • Organized 2 club rush work days to come up with Club recruitment materials, 2014, 2015

  • Led 3 half-hour club rush sessions for each year, 2014, 2015

  • Led 3 half-hour club refresh sessions for each year, 2014, 2015

Project Phase 2 - NEW GEN FINANCIAL LITERACY EVENT (10/17/2014 - 11/19/2015)

  • 700 students and staff  participated from  Oxford Academy and Loara High School with support from Cypress High School Culinary

  • Format of the event is interviews, Q&A, to provide simple but effective Financial Literacy concepts to High School students.

  • High profile speakers and supporters including California State Treasurer Honorable John Chiang, AUHSD Superintendent Michael Matsuda, Capital Resource Inc. President Rick Kagawa, Orange County BSA Chief Executive Jeffrey Herrmann, Deputy Executive Danny Tucker, California State Senator Bob Huff's representativeExploring Executive, John Miller, City of Cypress Major, Rob Johnson, Gamble Jones Investment Counsel Tap Le, and others.

  • Financial Literacy Event on Youtube:

  • Letters of support from Congressman Alan Lowenthal, California State Senator Bob Huff, California State  Senator Janet Nguyen.

  • Raised $1575 from the following sponsors: Gamble Jones Investment Counsel , Oxford Academy AGI Consulting, Kiwanis Club, Econolite, Survey Work.

  • The survey afterward showed that most of the audience now  take to heart the concept "Save 10% of what you earn. Make more than you spend"
