General Information

Hello and welcome to our class page.  Here you will find information about the Gifted and Talented program at Independence Elementary.  In addition, you will find helpful links, including our Youtube page, Twitter page, and other things I find interesting.

Gifted and Talented

Giftedness is a greater awareness, a greater sensitivity, and a greater ability to understand and transform perceptions into intellectual and emotional experiences. (Roeper, 1982)

Giftedness is asynchronous development in which advanced cognitive abilities and heightened intensity combine to create experiences and awareness that are qualitatively different from the norm.  This asynchrony increases with higher intellectual capacity.  The uniqueness of the gifted renders them particularly vulnerable and requires modifications in parenting, teaching, and counseling in order to develop optimally. (Columbus Group, 1991)

A bit about me:

My name is Mrs. Smith.  I am beginning my 4th year of teaching. I have taught 5th grade ELA and Social Studies at Independence Elementary, which will probably explain why a lot of my pages are projects that I did with those classes.  As my new students may still benefit from some of these resources, I wont delete them, yet. :). I have taught 7/8th grade Gifted and Talented at Yukon Middle School, and stopped using this page, hence, having no middle school resources :). Now, I am back at Independence with 4/5th Gifted and Talented.

My goal is to expand on students interests, while encouraging them to try new things, take risks, and gain leadership and group skills.  I do this through activities that are cognitively challenging but fun, in a problem based and project based environment.

At any time, if you would like to get a hold of me, I answer e-mails as soon as I can, and it's probably the fastest way you can reach me. Looking forward to a new year!

Just in case you would like to help our class out with supplies and extras:  I have started an Amazon Wishlist to communicate some things we need or would like to have.  Please check it out!

Most video projects we complete will be posted to my class Youtube page.  Below is a direct link to that page.

Here's a link to a page that explains what the Scholastic Reading Club is and provides you with our classroom code.  I am a firm believer in encouraging students to read and read widely.  Scholastic is a great place to start to identify your child's interests.  In addition, with each order, my classroom gets points, and I can cash in those points to expand our classroom library!
