It all began at a discussion at the Cambridge tournament in 2006 about how we could improve our club organisation and increase access to various funding streams. The easy option would have been to proceed with no juniors, as we had no proper connections with schools at the time. It was Laura Brown, of Volleyball England, who persuaded us to aim high and go for Volley 1 accreditation and develop school links. These were needed as although we were a successful club, we depended on new arrivals from outside the area, mostly via the University. And, we were all getting older!
We struggled for some time until through one of our players, Lukasz Druzic, we made connections with Huntington School, the Ebor Schools Partnership and York Council. With regular volleyball starting at the school, a team entered in the summer's Lets Play Volleyball Festival in York and we were under way. It soon led us to develop an After School Club and a regular Friday night session, with mostly Under 16 boys, who also play in our Yorkshire Division One team, which otherwise would have folded. The team is keen to find other Under 16 teams to play! Will and Elle Bromley have played a major role in the establishment of this junior section, although they also had a wedding to organise!
Volley 1 accreditation helped us to put all the correct training in place for the volunteers who run the club and get more people to help out. The club has teams in the both the Yorkshire Men's and Women's Premier Leagues, the Ladies winning their league in 2008. Inspired by Men's Team Captain, Pascal Charles, the club entered a team in the National Volleyball League for the first time, in fact the first team from North Yorkshire to do so. We needed to co-ordinate training sessions and coaches to achieve all our aims. The Publicity Officer, Mike Turner, made sure the website www.yorkvolleyball.org.uk and the local press carried all the good news. The website also houses the club's new handbook. The club also runs a successful summer tournament, which in 2008 was part of the Volleyball England Regional Grass Series.
The recognition of Volley 1 status is a great reward for all this hard work by the whole club and it is a springboard to aim for even more achievements over the coming years.
