Collaboration at its best

Leadership Class Write Up

First term, Ms. Franciosa’s PLF4M1 Leadership class paired up with students in Ms. Miraglia’s Social Communication Program to create a truly unique physical education experience with a focus on meaningful integration and inclusion. Leadership students worked daily with SCP students for 25 minutes of physical activity. They focused on creating adaptive activities and lessons for students with different special needs. Leadership students factored in potential challenges and the diversity of the community. Students looked at interests, engagement, resources/materials, physical limitations, individual student goals, etc. SCP students appreciated the Leadership students’ dedication and efforts to ensure meaningful and engaging activities. Leadership students appreciated learning about the diversity of our special needs students and experiencing the joy they brought to gym class. Together, both the classes were able to get fit and have fun. It was an invaluable experience for all the students involved. Our joint experience culminated with an amazing trip to Variety Village which credits itself as a “world class facility without barriers.” It was truly a day of fitness for all. It included wheelchair basketball, modified floor hockey, bowling pin dodgeball and sitting volleyball. Thank you to Variety Village for providing an eye opening learning experience. Thank you to all the students involved for making the joint class such a success.
