The focus of HMS's School Counseling Program is on prevention which can be defined as:

Prevention is a "proactive" process that empowers individuals and systems to meet the challenges of life events and transitions by creating and reinforcing conditions that promote healthy behaviors and lifestyles.

Active communication and effective discipline are keys to raising teens who can succeed in today’s world.  For this reason, HMS offers the “Active Parenting” course in the fall and in the spring.  For several years now, this course has been rated as “excellent” by parents who have participated.  This is a wonderful opportunity to learn new strategies, as well as share ideas and experiences with other parents.

Parents will Learn:

*to identify parenting styles and how to influence teen behavior
*how to build courage, self-esteem, and positive behavior
*the five goals of teen behavior
*steps for preventing problems

Food for thought:  It is our individual responsibility that each one of us be aware of the power that our actions and words have on other people.

People will forget what you said
People will forget what you did
But people will never forget how you made them feel.
