Dear Parents/Guardians of 6th Graders,

Welcome to Mrs. Jessi Watts’ 6th Grade Language Arts Class! I am excited to work with you to make ALL of our student’s successful learners. In class this year, we will be closely reading literature, informational text and poetry. We will also be writing narrative, informational and argumentative text. You can find the Common Core Standards we cover at the following link: http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/RL/6/

How do I keep up with upcoming events and due dates?

Check out the calendar link to the left.

How can I check my student’s grade on PowerSchool Parent Portal (online grading system)?

In order to keep up with what your student is missing and their current grade, please create an account on PowerSchool Parent Portal by going to the Cane River Middle School website and under the “Parents” tab you click on Parent Portal. From there you will be redirected to the Yancey County website where you can click on the following link https://yanceync.powerschool.com/public/ to create an account. There is also a PowerSchool Mobile App. You can check your student’s grade anytime you want to so it should never be a surprise when you receive their mid-term grade or report card. Lastly, there are rewards for those that have no missing work and good grades as well as behavior.

Reading Log/Book Projects:

Every student is responsible for earning at least 10 Accelerated Reader points per quarter. They will be selecting their own books to read based on their reading ability and interest. In order to gain a grade for reading on their own, they must complete 3 reading logs each week which will be done in class and complete a reading conference with me. There will be reward trips and prizes for those that exceed their goals each quarter. They may also be required to do Book Projects and Book Talks on their finished books.

Homework

For homework, students should be reading for 20 minutes each night. Also, they will have vocabulary units each week to do at home and will occasionally have reading passages.

Request to Retest

If a student receives a 70% or below they can fill out a “Request to Retest” form, which they can turn into me with their plan on how they will better prepare for the retest and a parent signature. The restest will be scheduled for a later date.

Missing Work:

It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with what they are missing and need to make-up! There is a composition book they can check, which has each day's agenda, and a missing work folder for each class with handouts that they missed. They are also encouraged to check the online grading system on PowerSchool to see if they have any zeros.    At least 10-20% will be taken off for late assignments.

When is  Mrs. Watts available?

If a parent/guardian has any concerns or questions please feel free to contact me via email at jessicawatts@yanceync.net or by phone at (828) 682-2202. The best time to reach me is during my planning times which are from 12:00-12:50 p.m. and 2:00-2:35 p.m.

Let’s work together to make this year great!

Mrs. Jessi Watts
