Escape Dystopia. Zrcadlo současnosti.
Výstava zkoumá atmosféru nejisté budoucnosti v době globální krize a odráží aktuální problémy.
Svět v současné době čelí různým výzvám, které ovlivňují způsob, jakým se chováme v každodenním životě, jak pracujeme, a nakonec i způsob, jakým fungujeme jako společnost. Mezi příklady patří využívání přírody, které vede ke globální klimatické katastrofě a následně spouští uprchlickou dynamiku, nebo pravicový populismus, který získává na síle ve značné části Evropy i mimo ni a je upevňován mimo jiné marginalizovanými skupinami populace, které se již necítí být osloveny neoliberální politikou, či krize demokracie, způsobená vstřícností k podnikání, a v neposlední řadě pandemie, která obletěla celý svět.
Výstava Escape Dystopia neslibuje růžový pohled na světlou budoucnost ani nemaluje čerta na zeď. Snaží se čelit otázkám, jež se týkají současných globálních problémů, a chce je učinit viditelnými a hmatatelnými. Pouze pokud problém pochopíme - nahlédneme jeho hloubku, příčiny i důsledky - můžeme mu pohlédnout “hluboko do očí” a nalézt jeho smysluplná řešení.
Výstava nabízí okamžik klidu, zastavení, reflexe. Chvíli posečkání, zatímco bomba tiká dál. Budoucnost sice začíná zítra, nikdo ale neví, co přinese. Můžeme jen hádat.
To, co vidíme, nás znepokojuje. Změna klimatu, pravicový populismus a ekonomická recese utvářejí dystopickou budoucnost, se kterou se teprve musíme naučit zacházet. Na změny není pozdě, vůči současným krizím se ale nelze jednoduše vymezit; již napořád ovlivní, jak vnímáme a utváříme vlastní budoucnost. Člověk se totiž učí z chyb.
Je nutné zamyslet se nad aktuálním stavem, udělat krok zpět a podívat se na přítomnost s odstupem. A nepropadat panice. Musíme se problémům postavit čelem. Nesmíme zavřít oči ani být hysteričtí. Je zapotřebí promyšlené a racionální řešení. Dýchat. Soustředit se. Zůstat v klidu.
Aktuální globální problémy: Odkud se berou? Co přinášejí? Není pochyb, že ovlivňují celý náš život. Jak k nim můžeme přistoupit, aniž by nás paralyzoval strach? Skupinová výstava Escape Dystopia zkoumá aktuální světové problémy skrze práce rakouských a českých umělců, kteří se této problematice dlouhodobě věnují. Kombinuje díla z oblasti videa, instalace a mediálního umění, která vznikla přímo pro výstavu.

Escape Dystopia. Reflexionen der Gegenwart.
Momentan sieht die Welt verschiedenen Herausforderungen entgegen, welche die Art und Weise, wie wir unser tägliches Leben führen, wie wir arbeiten, und schließlich wie wir als Gesellschaft funktionieren, beeinflussen. Beispielhaft zu nennen wären die Ausbeutung der Natur, die zur globalen Klimakatastrophe führt und in weiterer Folge Fluchtbewegungen auslöst. Oder der in weiten Teilen Europas und auch außerhalb erstarkende Rechtspopulismus, unter anderem verfestigt durch an den Rand gedrängte Bevölkerungsteile, die sich von der neoliberalen Politik nicht mehr angesprochen fühlen, bis hin zu einer Krise der Demokratie, verursacht durch deren zunehmende Unternehmerfreundlichkeit, und nicht zuletzt die den gesamten Erdball umspannende Pandemie.
Die Ausstellung Escape Dystopia verspricht weder einen rosigen Blick in eine heile Zukunft, noch malt sie den Teufel an die Wand. Sie versucht Fragestellungen zu aktuellen globalen Problemen ein Gesicht zu geben, sie visuell und greifbar zu machen. Erst wenn wir ein Problem verstehen, seine Tiefe, die Gründe und Auswirkungen unter die Lupe genommen haben, ihm tief in die Augen geschaut haben, können wir auch tiefgreifende Lösungen finden. Die Ausstellung bietet einen reflexiven Moment, eine Pause, ein Nachdenken. Ein Moment der Ruhe, des sich Ausnehmens, während die Bombe weiterhin tickt. Die Zukunft beginnt schon morgen. Doch niemand weiß was sie bringen wird. Wir können es nur ahnen.
Und was wir sehen beunruhigt uns. Klimawandel, Rechtspopulismus, Wirtschaftsrezession zeichnen eine dystopische Zukunft ab, trotzdem müssen wir lernen damit umzugehen. Für Veränderungen ist es noch nicht zu spät, aber aktuelle Krisen können nicht rückgängig gemacht werden, sie werden für immer Einfluss darauf haben, wie wir unsere Zukunft gestalten. Denn aus Fehlern lernt man bekanntlich.
Dazu ist es notwendig den aktuellen Zustand zu reflektieren, einen Schritt zurück zu gehen und den Moment in den Blick zu nehmen. Auch um nicht in Panik zu verfallen. Wir müssen uns den Problemen annähern, uns ihnen stellen. Wir dürfen nicht die Augen verschließen, gleichzeitig auch nicht in Hysterie verfallen. Durchdachte, rationale Lösungen sind erforderlich. Durchatmen. Konzentrieren. Ruhig Bleiben.
Aktuelle globale Krisenherde: Woher kommen sie? Was bringen sie mit sich? Ohne Frage beeinflussen sie unser aller Leben. Wie können wir uns ihnen annähern, ohne von Angst gelähmt zu sein? Die Ausstellung Escape Dystopia zeigt eine Untersuchung aktueller globaler Fragestellungen und versammelt Arbeiten von österreichischen sowie tschechischen künstlerischen Positionen der Gegenwartskunst aus den Bereichen Video, Installation und Medienkunst, welche für die Ausstellung neu entstehen und damit dem Puls der Zeit entsprechen.

Escape Dystopia. Reflections on the present age.
Escape Dystopia reflects current issues and reviews the atmosphere of an uncertain future in times of global crisis.
The world is facing various challenges at the moment that affect the way we behave in everyday life, how we work, and finally the way we function as a society. Examples include the exploitation of nature, which is leading to a global climate catastrophe, and is subsequently triggering refugee movements. Or right-wing populism, which is gaining strength in large parts of Europe and beyond, and is being consolidated, among other things, by marginalized sections of the population who no longer feel represented by neoliberal policies, to a crisis of democracy caused by its increasing entrepreneurial friendliness, and last but not least the pandemic that is sweeping the globe.
The Escape Dystopia exhibition neither promises a rosy view into a bright future, nor does it paint the devil on the wall. It tries to illustrate questions on current global problems, to make them visual and tangible. Only when we understand a problem, have examined its depth, its causes and effects, have looked deep into its eyes, can we find profound solutions. The exhibition offers a reflective moment, a pause, a reflection. A moment of calm, of evisceration, while the bomb continues to tick. The future begins tomorrow. But nobody knows what it will bring. We can only guess.
And what we see worries us. Climate change, right-wing populism and economic recession are shaping a dystopian future, but we still have to learn to deal with it. It is not too late for change, but current crises cannot be reserved, they will forever influence how we shape our future. Because, as you know, you learn from mistakes.
To do this, it is necessary to reflect on the current state, to take a step back and look at this very moment. And to not panic. We must approach problems, face them. We must not close our eyes, and at the same time we must not become hysterical. Well thought-out, rational solutions are required. Breathe. Concentrate. Remain calm.
Current global trouble spots: Where do they come from? What do they bring with them? There is no question that they influence all our lives. How can we approach them without being paralyzed by fear? Escape Dystopia shows an examination of current global issues by Austrian and Czech artists and combines works in the fields of video, installation and media art created for this group exhibition.
Polina Davydenko (*1995) is an audiovisual artist based in Brno. Her previous work deals with the approach of documentary photography and focuses especially on cultural stereotypes in the relationship between humans and animals. Recurring aspect in Davydenko's work is the study of the phenomenon of storytelling. Currently, one of Davydenko‘s main themes is the voyeuristic documentary photographer and her/his role in relation to the observed object. Her main medium is photography, but also audio, video and installation. In her previous work she observed relationship between coal mining in eastern Ukraine and beekeeping.

Michal Mitro (*1989) combines post-medial tendencies, sculpturality and visuality in his artistic practice. His working method is best described as artistic research and its outputs often take a hybrid artScience shape. Topics that resonate often in Mitro’s works explore present and future states of our planet, politico-economic societal constellations and relationship between human and non-human. He approaches art-making as information-sharing and to that end utilise immersive and narrational strategies. He has exhibited and performed in Czechia (Vasulka Kitchen, Letna Studio, Korespondance, Prototyp), Slovakia (Kasarne, DIG gallery, VUNU) and across Europe (Gamma Festival, Petersburg; Mediamatic, Amsterdam; JRM, Paris; Trafo, Budapest; Genius Loci, Weimar; Grey Space, den Haag;
AV depot, London). Besides being an active art practitioner, he is also part of STELLA – Somatic Tech Lab – that maps convergences of technologies and movement-based arts. In addition, he is curator of ssesi.space online and in Brno, Czechia.

Total Refusal (Leonhard Müllner (*1987), Michael Stumpf (*1985) and Robin Klengel (*1988)) describe themselves as artists / filmmakers collective and pseudo-marxist media guerrilla, that intervenes in current video games and writes papers about games and politics. Since 2018 it has been awarded with 22 prizes (and 10 honorary mentions) like the Loop Discovery Award , the Contemporary Visual Arts Award of Styria Province and Vimeo Staff Pick Award among others. Total Refusal has been screened at more than 120 film and video festivals like Berlinale (2020), BFI London (2018) and IDFA Amsterdam (2018) and they been exhibited at various exhibition spaces like the HEK Basel (2020), CURRENTS New Media in Santa Fe (2020) and the Ars Electronica Linz (2019).
Leonhard Müllner lives and works in Vienna as visual artist and media researcher and is currently doing his PhD in Media Studies. Robin Klengel lives and works as artist, illustrator and cultural anthropologist in Vienna and Graz. Michael Stumpf studied Philosophy and is currently completing his studies of Media Culture and Art Theories in Linz.
