No Idling and CO2 Offset

Members of the Grade 8 WEL class have accepted the Lexus Eco Challenge to take action to improve air quality and address climate change. The Lexus Eco Challenge is a program designed by Lexus and Scholastic to educate and empower students to take action to improve the environment.
The CO2 Crew is raising awareness about New Jersey's no idling law. By law motor vehicles are limited to 3 minutes of idling.

Idling wastes gas and emits harmful air pollutants at ground level where they can affect the health of young children. Idling also contributes carbon dioxide to the atmosphere without any transportation benefit from the burning of gas.

To raise awareness, the CO2 Crew is encouraging families to take the No Idling pledge.

Trees use atmospheric carbon dioxide. Because trees can offset some of the CO2 emitted by motor vehicles, the CO2 Crew is also promoting donations to the New Jersey Audubon Society Lorrimer Sanctuary in nearby Franklin Lakes.

The wildlife sanctuary was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Donations would support the restoration of this local forested area. Donations to NJ Audubon Society are currently tax deductible.

The data collected through the survey will be used by the team to document the effectiveness of their awareness campaign.
