Southern West Virginia Robotics Club

An Organization of Parents, Educators, and Students

WVSU SEMAA has fostered a STEM parent organization with non- profit status; Southern West Virginia Robotics Club (SWVRC) to promote STEM within our region. SWVRC has played a fundamental role in assisting WVSU NASA SEMAA in seeding robotics teams for the purpose of competition participation and continuing these efforts into rocketry.

The first team that was created out of this endeavor was named "Thunderbrains" by student participants. "Thunderbrains" participated in their first FLL scrimmage tournament at Bridgement Technical College in November 2013 and won first place in Robotics Design and the Table Game. The first FLL State Tournament the team participated in was December 4, 2013 at Fairmont State College for which Team "Thunderbrains" ranked a very respectable 25th place.

In 2014, "Thunderbrains" placed 1st in robot game at NRCTC during the season's first scrimmage.  On November 15th, "Thunderbrains" placed 2nd in robot design and 4th in robot game at the qualifying event at BCTC and assured their place for the WV FLL State Tournament on December 6th at FSU during the State competition. President Jim Higgins received a WV Volunteer of the Year Award at the WV FLL State Competition.

In December 2015, participants ranked 25th out of over 100 teams.

The 2016 season allowed for a secondary team to be formed -"Robotic Raptors" in addition to "Thunderbrains".  These teams met each week at the NASA SEMAA facility with coach Jim Higgins and assistant coaches to ready for the competition. In the 2016 October 22nd scrimmage in Ronceverte the Thunderbrains team received the Robot Performance Award & Team Spirit Award. On November 12, 2016 "Thunderbrains" placed 2nd overall in State Qualifier Event, 1st Place in Robot Design & Robot Performance. "Thunderbrains" team won the WV State FLL tournament Robot Design- Programming Award and "Robotic Raptors", (please review below for newly formed teams) won Robot Design- Mechanical Design Award.  Jim Higgins, President of SWVRC won the WV Volunteer of the Year Award (2nd time) and the parent organization was also given a sponsorship award.
