ELA Grade 9 Summer Reading (College Preparatory & Honors) 2016

Summer Reading for year 2016

Greetings!  As you know summer reading is a tradition for most high schools across the United States.  Summer reading is a way for you to keep your brain "fit'" and it has been stated that the more a person reads, the better they read.  Overall, we encourage you to take advantage of the reading options available, and, hopefully, find a little enjoyment while reading.

*SUMMER READING FOR ENGLISH 9 HONORS IS REQUIRED.

*SUMMER READING FOR ENGLISH 9 COLLEGE IS SUGGESTED.

Step 1: READ THE BOOK

The Boy in Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne

Step 2Complete the Assignment described below.

This assignment requires you to make a visual presentation using GoogleSlides, Powerpoint, or even Prezi.  The presentation should include the following details:

  • Four slides total
  • One (1) chosen image/picture/illustration per slide (four total)
  • For each image/picture/illustration, choose a passage from The Boy in Striped Pajamas that is represented by your visual choice and quote the most important lines from the passage on the slide.

*For English 9 Honors, this is required.

**For English 9 College Preparatory, this is optional. If the assignment is completed, it will be rewarded with a bonus quiz grade.

Step 3:  The Return to School

English 9 Honors students will compose a short essay about the novel, upon the return to school.  Classes will also participate in review activities for better understanding of the novel.

If you have any concerns or questions about summer reading or the assignments, please feel free to contact any 9th grade teacher.
