8th Grade Transition - Class of 2022

Welcome to all 8th graders and their families! We want to help you transition into Wachusett Regional High School in the best way possible. We are excited to have you come to the high school; we think you'll love your experience here!

We view this process in two ways - getting 8th graders comfortable at the high school and getting 8th graders scheduled into the correct classes. We hope the information on this page will help you accomplish both goals.

If your son/daughter is planning on attending another high school, please fill out this survey so we're able to attend to his/her record appropriately: https://goo.gl/forms/c2rHsGS0nH3GAdV52

We will have two opportunities for students and parents to learn more about the high school and its course offerings/levels: an Academic Presentation in March (March 20th) and an open house on a date in June to be determined.

Please review the Wachusett Regional High School Educational Guide - it describes every class we offer!

Tuesday, March 20th  - Academic Information Night - See the presentation slides here
Parents and students are invited to a presentation in the WRHS Auditorium. The presentation will begin at 6:30pm and will feature administrators and department heads discussing what the academic experience at Wachusett is like. We will be discussing the differences between CP, CPA, Honors, and AP levels; what a typical freshman schedule may look like; what electives are available to freshmen; how to pick courses for next year in Powerschool; and other important academic topics. WRHS department heads and administrators will be available afterward in the cafeteria to answer questions.

Wednesday, June 13th - 6:00pm-8:00pm -  WRHS Open House
Parents and students are invited to come to the high school and see the building. We will have tours throughout the two-hour open house, as well as an Extracurricular Fair in the Cafeteria so students and parents can learn more about the clubs, sports, and other activities we have available for students.
No registration is necessary, and parents/students are welcome to stop by at any point throughout the two hour event.

Wednesday, August 22nd - Morning - Incoming Freshmen Orientation
Incoming 8th graders will receive their schedules during this event, as well as have an opportunity to get more comfortable with the layout of the building and become more familiar with what to expect at WRHS. This event is for students only.
The event will be held from 7:30am-11:30am, but the event is broken up between "White House" Freshmen and "Green House" freshmen. Families will receive post-cards in July once house designations have been made, so students will know if they're White or Green House and what time to arrive.

We strongly encourage 8th graders and their parents to come to the Academic Presentation in March, as many details about this process will be discussed.
From Monday, March 26th through Friday, March 30th, current 8th graders and their families will be able to log on to Powerschool and view their recommended course levels for academic classes. They will also be able to select their preferred elective course(s), as well as an alternate/alternates.

Here are the steps in the scheduling process:
  1. Log in to Powerschool between Monday, March 26th and Friday, March 30th
  2. Click on the "Class Registration" icon on the left side of your screen. It looks like this:
  3. Explore the "Requests" screen and click on the pencil icon (on the right) to see recommended course levels and make your selection
  4. View the recommended course level and select that course (for academic courses with a recommendation, you can only select the recommended course level)
  5. Repeat step 4 for every academic course (English, Math, History, Science, Foreign Language).
  6. Select your elective classes - you can either select one full year course or two semester courses. You should also select alternates in the event that you don't get your first choice. See the WRHS Program of Studies for more information on electives
  7. Submit your course requests
  8. 8th graders can request a different course level, other than what was recommended. Reconsideration Forms will be available for 8th graders on this website before the scheduling process begins. All Recon Forms must be submitted to WRHS Guidance Counselors when they come to your school to individually review course requests (see timeline below) or to the WRHS Guidance Office by April 11th. The only times Reconsideration Forms can be submitted for 8th graders after April 11th is when the 2018-2019 school year begins - Forms cannot be submitted during the summer months.
  9. Review your course selections with a WRHS Guidance Counselor and ask any questions you might have!
Current 8th graders will see that their course request screens will be pre-populated with the PE and Freshman Seminar classes that they will take. We also recommend that 8th graders consider completing their Fine Arts requirement during their freshman year. Information about the Fine Arts requirement and other graduation requirements can be found in the Program of Studies

Guidance Visits
WRHS Guidance Counselors will be traveling to the 8th grades to meet with students individually in order to review their course requests and answer any questions, according to the following schedule:
  • April 2nd - Central Tree
  • April 3rd - Mountview
  • April 4th - Thomas Prince
  • April 5th - Paxton Center School
  • April 6th - Chocksett
Reconsideration Forms
To request a different course level from what was recommended, you can fill out a reconsideration form and send it into the WRHS guidance office. The form can be mailed to the high school guidance office, or e-mailed to Jon_Krol@wrsd.net. Forms must be received by the WRHS Guidance Office by April 11th, 2018. Forms cannot be accepted after that date. The next opportunity to change a course level will be during the fall of the 2018-2019 school year with the student's guidance counselor. Course changes/reconsideration forms cannot be processed over the summer or after April 11, 2018.
