Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading program which helps students build reading mastery at their own individual

level by reading books that excite and motivate them. The program works by students reading a book, taking a quick

computerized multiple-choice quiz and then receiving rewards for passing the test (at least 85% correct) and for continuing to read. Children choose books which are within their Reading Zone. Once the child has finished the book, he/she takes a computerized quiz. The quizzes contain literal questions on facts and events critical to understanding the story line. After successfully passing the test they earn points (points vary depending on the book). Students earn points in an effort to reach individualized goals that I set for them based upon their reading ability.

All students will have plenty of opportunities to take quizzes at school. Students are not able to take quizzes at home. I do encourage students to choose books within their reading level to read at home for homework and bring the book to school to take a quiz on. To take a quiz, please make sure your child has read the story many times to ensure comprehension of the details. At school I require students to read their book of choice at least 3 times before signing up to take a quiz. When students only read their book once they may miss importation information that might be asked as one of the comprehension questions, so by reading it 3 times it ensures better comprehension. Although students cannot take quizzes from home, you can access their account to see how they are doing on their quizzes at school, their progress toward their trimester AR goal, and a library of the books they have already taken a quiz on to make sure they don't read a book they've already taken a quiz on (they have a hard time keeping track of which books they've taken quizzes on.
