Resources from Reading Specialists…

Last week at our PTO meeting, our Reading Specialists discussed literacy interventions at Greenwood and how all parents and teachers support their child's /students' literacy development. Below please find some reference materials from their presentation:

Friendly Reminder from Physical Education

Please remember to send your child to school with sneakers on the days he/she has Physical Education. For safety reasons I can't allow students to participate in Physical Education if they are wearing boots. I realize that it's difficult to remember which day your child has PE so I suggest keeping a pair of sneakers in their backpack. Water bottles are also highly recommended too!  Thank you!

At the beginning of the school year, the Greenwood School received a second defibrillator donated by the Paul J. Pasciuto Memorial Foundation. This defibrillator is located by the rear door in an alarmed cabinet. As many people are aware, early CPR and defibrillator use improve outcomes significantly in the event of an emergency. Having a defibrillator in the nurse’s office as well as the rear of the building can save precious minutes when the defibrillator is needed. We are grateful to the foundation for this generous donation.

The Wakefield Academy has provided the Wakefield Public School System with important emergency equipment as well.  Last year, four child manikins were purchased by the Academy for use in CPR classes in the schools.  This year, the Academy purchased a Zoll Defibrillator Trainer (for teaching defibrillator use) and CPR masks (for placement in strategic areas of the schools).

Dear Wakefield Families,
We are requesting your support to help shape the school budget priorities for the 2014-15 school year. Please join us for our second public community forum that will happen on Wednesday, January 15th from 7-8:30pm. This forum is  open to all families regardless of which school your child attends.

This will be an opportunity for the broader community to learn more about my initial findings related to where we'll want to focus our budget in the 2014-15 school year. That is, we hope to gather input on my entry observations and their implications for emerging district budget priorities.  We are eager to hear the community's ideas and feedback on best supporting our children's learning. It is critical that we hear the public's thoughts in advance of submitting our budget proposal to the School Committee, the town's Finance Committee and ultimately to Town Meeting in May.

This is part of our larger effort to make the budget process more transparent to our constituents.  It is our goal to demystify the process and allow for increased public voice prior to the submission of the final budget. I want to thank you in advance for your participation and engagement as we design a fiscal plan that best supports the needs of Wakefield's children.

Dear Parents,
It was wonderful to see so many parents at the PTO meeting last Tuesday evening. What a great meeting and a nice way to start the New Year! I highly encourage parents to attend PTO meetings so that you can learn about all the wonderful ways you can become involved in the school. Thank you to Michele Labrecque and Kathy Holland our reading specialists who were our guest presenters.
Kindergarten registration will be held on Tuesday January 28thfrom 9:00 – 11:30 and Wednesday January 29th   from 12:15 – 2:00 p.m.  If you have neighbors that have recently moved in to Wakefield, please pass this information on to them. Please have them contact Mrs. Paiva at the Greenwood School for a registration packet.
Please join Dr. Zrike Wednesday January 15th at the Dolbeare School at 7:00 p.m. He will share his findings based on his first five months as our superintendent, and this will be an opportunity for parents to learn about our budget process, and provide feedback regarding district priorities. Dr. Zrike and the administrative team welcome the opportunity to partner with parents and will look forward to your participation.

Get Ready for AuthorFest 2014!

The New Year is here and it is time to start getting excited for AuthorFest 2014.

AuthorFest is scheduled to roll into our school 
February 10th-14th, the week before school vacation. What better way to send the kids off to vacation than to have them spend time with nationally recognized children’s authors, illustrators and photographers!

The AuthorFest planning committee has been busy 
all school year making sure that AuthorFest 2014 is a blast! We will welcome 5 authors into our school: the kindergartners will be delighted withDavid Biedryckithe 1st and 4th graders captivated by Jacqueline Daviescelebrated author of the Lemonade Warseries, the 2nd graders charmed with Suzy Kline and the 3rd graders inspired by Judith Jango-CohenAs an added bonus, Wakefield native writer, illustrator and sea life expert, Janice Petrie, will be joining us on Monday for a quick visit to preview her whimsical and informative books on sea creatures we all love.

Please be sure to find the Book Order Form with selections from this year’s authors. All books listed are available for purchase and can be inscribed and signed by the authors to the child of your choice. Also, don’t forget to visit The Beebe Library where selections from our visiting authors will be on display.

We are thrilled to again offer AuthorFest 2014‘s Poetry/Reading Night…

at the Most Blessed Sacrament Church hall on Monday, February 10th from 6:00-8:30PM. We welcome all of our talented and emerging authors and poets. We encourage all students to read a selection or write their own poem or short story to be read to the audience at the church hall that Monday night. Light refreshments will be served. So get those creative thinking caps on and save the date!

Introducing Janice Petrie…

On Monday, February 10th, we are lucky to be welcoming a Wakefield native, writer, illustrator and lover of sea life to AuthorFest 2014 as a special guest. Janice Petrie will be visiting our two full day kindergarten classes Mondayafternoon to share her knowledge and excitement of sea animals with a short presentation including a look at some live sea creatures. Janice, founder of SeaTales, is a former outreach specialist with the New England Aquarium and holds multiple degrees in elementary education, reading education, art and graphic design. Her presentations are expertly designed to meet elementary education standards and frameworks. 

Please find her two brightly colored books packed with interesting facts about sea life that she has presented to students over the years on the AuthorFest 2014Book Order form.

Auction Donantions Needed for 3rd Grade Auction!

Each year at the Greenwood School the third grade classes have a silent auction to benefit their end of 4th grade activities.  These activities include a Moving On Ceremony, Class Picnic following the Ceremony, Class Gift, Yearbook and a special 4th grade field trip. The third grade auction is our one and only opportunity to raise money for all the 4th grade activities. The auction will be held at the Greenwood School Family Dance on Friday, April 11th. The auction will also be available online at www.biddingforgood.com for 2 weeks prior to the Family Dance. We are asking that each family make a donation to the auction.  
We have some wonderful auction items all ready from both Corporate donors and from 3rd grade Families. Below is just a few items:

I'm still looking for family's to make a donation either money, Gift Cards, bottles of wine, scratch Tickets or if you own your own business a service. Any donation big or small is greatly appreciated.  
I would like to have all donations to me by March 1st, so I can get them loaded on to the online auction site.
3rd Grade Auction Chairperson
The Cultural Arts Committee is kicking off the new year with a very exciting program on Friday January 24th at 1:30 for All Grades. The following program is one of many programs offer by Young Audiences of Massachusess. If you are interested in other programs YA has to offer please visit their wesite at  http://yamass.org/index.php/programs.

Capoeira: Afro-Brazilian Martial Arts, Music, and Dance

Afro-Brazilian Ensemble

This energetic program highlights three principal elements of Brazilian history and culture: music, martial arts, and dance. Master performers drum out rhythms steeped in history and brought into the present through artful interpretation. Their movements are smooth, seemingly effortless and highly acrobatic. Engaged from start to finish, students learn about various forms of capoeira, maculele, samba and their origins. The presentation weaves together performance and contextual information with a pervasive sense of fun and play. Volunteers will be called up to do some dancing of their own.

Parents and Teachers,
We are pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Box Tops Contest!
Last year, we collected over 6,800 Box Tops – let’s try to beat that number this year!

Starting Monday, January 20th – Friday, February 14th

– each class will start to collect Box Tops in their classroom.  The classroom that collets the most Box Tops will win a pizza party day!!!
Remember each Box Top is worth 10 cents each & it really adds up!
Teachers – If your class wishes to count/tally the Box Tops as they come in – please put in baggies of 50 Box Tops & mark the bag with a sharpie (50)– this is how they need to be submitted to Box Tops for Education and this will really help SO much with the collection.

We are planning our first 5K for March 29, 2014 and are actively soliciting sponsors now. There is opportunity to have your family name listed on the race t-shirt, as a Friends & Family Sponsor. If you are interested, please print and remit the attached form and payment to “Greenwood School PTO: Gator Gallop.”

There will not be a Tone Up for Technology fundraiser this year, so this is the school’s largest fundraising drive. More information and opportunities to be involved to come.
