BOSTON GLOBE’S SCHOLASTIC ART AWARDS
Ms. Schroer and Mrs. Pierri would like to recognize Nathan Dowdie, Jake Goodchild, Michael Raso, John Glendye, Henry Stikeman, Alyssa Kirk and Carly Holbrook for creating outstanding art work which was submitted for review by the Boston Globe's Scholastic Art Awards. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers. We are happy to announce that Carly's mask, a likeness of Audrey Hepburn, earned an Honorable Mention.

PENNIES FOR PATIENTS
Start saving your money for the “Pennies for Patients” fundraiser that will start on Monday, February 4th through Friday, March 1st. This fundraiser will be to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Individual student collection boxes will be sent home for students to keep at home to collect from family and friends. There will also be homeroom collection boxes that will go to each homeroom for collections that will be made daily. Please support this worthy cause.

GRADE 7 & 8 VALENTINE DANCE
There will be a Grade 7 & 8 Valentine Dance on Friday, February 8th from 7:00-9:30 p.m. in the Galvin Gym. For the period of December 10th to February 8th any student who has been assigned a Saturday School, or 2 or more Saturday tardy detentions, five or more detentions, or needs to make up any detentions she/he will not be allowed to attend the Valentine Dance. Also any student absent on the day of the dance will not be permitted to attend. Signed dance contracts need to be on file. No signed contracts will be accepted at the door. This dance is for GMS students only. Please see Ms. Jarmusik or Mr. Colantuoni if there are any questions.

GRADE 8 BABY PICTURES FOR YEARBOOK
The yearbook will be collecting baby pictures from Grade 8 students. Please have your picture in an envelope with your name you would like published and your homeroom. Please turn them into your homeroom teacher by Friday, March 1st.

THE SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR IS COMING TO THE GALVIN MIDDLE SCHOOL
The PTO is very excited to be bringing back the Scholastic Book Fair to the Galvin Middle School. Book fair dates are Tuesday, February 5th - Friday, February 8th. Each child will be given a chance with their classrooms to go down to the book fair and purchase books. The book fair will also be open on Wednesday night February 6th from 5-7 p.m. for friends and family to come and shop. FEBRUARY VACATION
February school vacation will begin on Monday, February 18th – Friday, February 22nd. School resumes on Monday, February 25th – Day 4.

BANKING AT GALVIN
The Savings Bank has started its banking program again at the Galvin Middle School. There is a drop off box in the Main Lobby for deposits. Banking day will be every Tuesday.

VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED
The PTO is also seeking volunteers to help out with fair, which will be set up in the Paulson Library. We are looking for several volunteers to cover at least at least an hour shift from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Wednesday 5 p.m.-7 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
We are still need more volunteers from 2pm-3pm each day and 8am-2pm on Friday. Please make sure you have a CORI on file with the school to volunteer. This is a great way to help with an event that is in the school, not many events like this take place at the Galvin.

VALENTINE TREATS FOR GALVIN STAFF
The Galvin PTO will be putting together a Valentine appetizer and chocolate day for the staff on Thursday, February 14th. If you are able to participate and donate Appetizers or a Chocolate item for this event please contact Cleo Rizos at decafam@verizon.net.

GALVIN FACULTY/STUDENT BASKETBALL GAME IS COMING
The Galvin PTO is gearing up for their 8th annual Student/Faculty Basketball Game. We look forward to you joining us on Tuesday, March 12th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Wakefield High School Field House as the Galvin Faculty Golden Eagles face off against the Student Galvin Globe Trotters. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Admission will be $3.00 for students and $4.00 for adults. Pizza, drinks and snacks will be sold at the Courtside Cafe.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED
Many volunteers are needed to make this event a success. Opportunities at the event include, set up and clean up, collecting admissions, helping out at the concession table, selling raffle tickets and assisting during the Half-Time Free Throw event. In addition, we will need individuals to create posters to advertise the event within the school (kids can help out here).

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION AT THE GALVIN MIDDLE SCHOOL
Calling all Box Tops!
Box Tops only send checks to schools a few times a year.~ Each Box Top is worth $.10 and they add up quickly!~ ~At the last Box Tops deadline in October the School was able to collect over $600. If we all do our best to clip those little pink and blue Box Tops on items that are most likely already in our houses.~ The next deadline to turn in Box Tops for this school year is coming up on Monday, February 25th.~ Please bring in any Box Tops you have at home no later than the 25th,~please bring them to the front office, and leave them in the Box Tops box in the far LEFT corner by the Box Tops drop off sign.
Thank you to each and every student & faculty member that does bring in box tops – when we collect Box Tops, everyone at our Galvin Middle School wins!!

UPCOMING 12th ANNUAL CHOCOLATE ROSE SALE!
Wakefield Educational Foundation (WEF) is launching our Chocolate Rose Sale on Thursday, January 24th through Tuesday, February 12th. Notices will be sent home via each school prior to the start date. Order forms are also available for Wakefield residents on our website www.wakefieldeducationalfoundation.org.
Each rose is individually wrapped, made of the finest ingredients and may be manufactured in a facility that processes nut products. The cost per rose is just $1! Chocolate Roses are the perfect ‘little something’ to bring to your beloved relatives, friends, co-workers, bosses, neighbors and teachers during the Valentine’s Day holiday!
Orders will be filled as they are received. Students will receive orders at school, while larger orders and Wakefield residents outside of the school system can make special delivery arrangements by contacting WEF at the phone numbers given on the order form.
The top 2 sellers at each elementary school and the top 4 sellers at the Galvin Middle School will win a $25 gift certificate to a store of their choice!
The Chocolate Rose Sale is one of WEF’s major fundraisers! The success of this fundraiser is crucial in determining the amount of grants we can award to the Wakefield Public Schools for next year. Our 2012 grant program awarded $22,950, 28 grants across the six schools in the district, so visit our website to see exactly how WEF dollars are being put to work!

ABSENCES
If your child is going to be absent you must call the Galvin Middle School at 781-246-6410 and press “1” for the Child Safety Line before 9:00 a.m. If your child will be absent for more than one day, please leave that information as well. If your child is going to be late please call the Child Safety Line and state the reason for being late.

STUDENT DISMISSALS
In order to be dismissed from school, a note signed by a parent/guardian, stating the specific reason for dismissal, must be brought into the Main Office before school starts by the student being dismissed. Please also indicate the child’s first and last name on the dismissal note. Parents/guardians MUST come into the Main Office to pick up and sign out their child for dismissal. Students are not allowed to walk to a dentist or doctor’s appointment once they arrive at school. A student must be dismissed to a parent or o another adult. A new policy has been put in place that anyone dismissing a student needs to present their picture identification to the office. This is for the safety of all students.

HOMEWORK REQUESTS
Parents may request homework assignments to be sent to the office after two (2) consecutive days of regular absence. All requests should be called into the Main Office at 781-246-6410 by 9:00 a.m. of the second day of absence. Requests for homework should not be left on the Child Safety Line.

GMS RECYCLING
The Galvin PTO continues to recycle paper. Newspaper, office and copy paper, junk mail, catalogs, magazines and paperback books are accepted. Bring your donations to the big green and yellow dumpsters on the parking lot side of the Galvin Middle School.
No phonebooks or cardboard.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING SCHEDULE
Regular meetings of the Wakefield School Committee are scheduled at 7:00 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month, except on holidays. The first meeting of each month is the business meeting and the 2nd meeting of the month is the educational meeting. The meetings are held at the WCAT Studio located at the rear of Wakefield High School, entrance next to the Field House. School Committee Agendas are posted on the website the Friday before the scheduled meeting. The regularly scheduled School Committee meetings are carried live on Channel 16 and rebroadcast throughout the week.
