News from the Nurse

We continue to closely monitor strep throat infections surfacing in our school.   Thank you to parents/guardians who have been very cooperative about having their child tested when symptoms surface and communicating with us when the test comes back positive.  While last week I reported it was primarily K and grade one, this week we have had cases across all grades.

While our school is cleaned daily by our custodial staff, this weekend we will have an additional clean to ensure we are doing everything possible to support our students.  All door handles, desks, and railings will be thoroughly disinfected as part of this clean.

Please continue to monitor your child's health. Symptoms of strep do not always include sore throat or a fever. Sometimes the primary complaint in children is a headache and stomachache but a strep test is positive.

If your child complains of a headache and stomachache for over 24 hours, you may want to call yourpediatrician.  If your child is running a temp- even a low grade one- and has one or more symptom of headache, sore throat or stomachache, this is even a higher indicator of potential for strep.

Please remember if your child has strep, he/she needs to be on an antibiotic and fever - free for 24 hours  before returning to school.

State recommendations include that, when possible, antibiotics are given at home three times a day (before school, after school and bedtime). If that is not possible and your child will require medication during the school day, please remember:

  1. Medication must be transported to and from school by an adult and given to an adult. It cannot come in with a child.
  2. It must come in a prescription -labeled bottle with a note from the parent/guardian for administration.
  3. It is recommended enough antibiotic be sent in to cover the time frame it will be given in school. For example , if it is a liquid, request a separate bottle for school administration.
  4. Except for Epi-pens, medication may not be dispensed during Wakefield Academy.

Any questions, please contact Mrs. Siebeking 781-246-6479

We understand that the high snow banks make pickup at the Dolbeare extra difficult and thank everyone for their patience.  Kindergarten parents are kindly reminded to park on Lowell St and refrain from parking in the front loop (this is available for drop off in the morning).  All other parents are reminded to meet children on the blacktop or to drive through the back horseshoe.  Safety remains our top priority and we ask parents to take extra care on the sidewalks and when crossing with children in or around streets.

We thank you for your support and cooperation.

Early Dismissal Procedures

All parents/guardians who pickup a child early from school will be asked to show ID.  While Mrs. Sacco and the office staff know many parents, we ask for everyone’s cooperation with this practice for consistency.  We understand that checking IDs does add a minute to the dismissal process and we thank you in advance for your ongoing partnership as we take proactive steps to continue to ensure all children’s safety.

Scholastic Book Clubs

The Scholastic Online Book Club is a great way to to buy great, low cost books for your family while giving bonus points to your teacher and the media center. The more you order, the more you give to the school. The books come to the Media Center and get distributed to your child's classroom. Orders are placed twice a month, once around the first and again around the 15th.
