|Dolbeare on the Move - September 19, 2016|
Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year!
We look forward to welcoming parents/guardians to our annual Back to School Night this Thursday, September 22nd from 5:30-7:30pm. The schedule for the evening is as follows:
This year, Wakefield Public Schools will roll out a revised standards-based elementary report card based on the Massachusetts State Standard Frameworks for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. The revised report card showcases power standards (or the building block standards) that are tightly aligned in grades K-4. The identified standards are important skills/concepts that continue to build throughout your child’s education. The revisions were led by a report card committee, that made recommendations to school-based leadership teams and school councils (to include parent feedback). The team continued to revise the report card as they received feedback from the various stakeholders.
- 5:30-6:30pm Vendor Fair (gym) Featuring district and community resources.
- 6:00-6:30pm Grades K & 1 Classroom Visits
- 6:30-7:00pm Principal Remarks (cafeteria)
- 7:00-7:30pm Grades 2 - 4 Classroom Visits
The following changes have been incorporated in the manner in which student progress is reported to families.
- Families receive information regarding their child’s progress every 45 days, either through a conference or a report card.
- Report cards are distributed twice a year. The rationale for this shift is that most of the standards on the report card are considered “power standards” that often take most of the school year to master. By issuing January reports, information provided to families is more informative regarding progress toward end of year standards.
- Parent Conferences are scheduled in November and March. This schedule ensures communication from teachers regarding student progress every 45 days throughout the school year.
- Academic Performance Skill Indicators will change from: (4 – exemplary, 3-proficient, 2, needs improvement, 1 – not meeting standard) to the following in hopes of providing families with more helpful information in determining the child’s progress toward standards: (M- Reached mastery level, P-Progressing towards mastery level, B-Beginning to progress toward standard, NY- Not yet, / Standard not assessed at this time)
- Standard Based/Report cards are paperless; paper copies are provided upon request.
To learn more, you are invited to join us on Thursday, October 27th from 6:30-7:30pm at Woodville Elementary School. This informational session will assist you in understanding your child's progress toward meeting the standards.
Have a wonderful week!

Greetings families! We are looking for several parent volunteers to help facilitate groups in Student Council this year. Students are writing essays that describe the Pillars of Character and submitting ideas they have to improve the school and community. Would you be the right person to help students make their ideas come to life? We could use your help. Please email Jay Wallace at firstname.lastname@example.org to volunteer. Thank you.

| Let's Support Our Fabulous Teachers|
The Dolbeare School has amazing teachers who work really hard to teach our children. As parents, we are always asking the teachers how we can help them.
The PTO has found a great way for us to help...we would like toTREAT our Dolbeare teachers! Let's spoil them by stocking their teacher's lounge. Click below for a list of items you can sign up to donate if you would like to contribute to restocking the teacher's room.
A table will be set up at Back to School Night September 22nd, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, for you to leave your contributions. Please email email@example.com with any questions. Thank you for helping us show the Dolbeare Teachers how much we appreciate them!!

Sparks! Science Museum!
We are gearing up for our Sparks! event this fall and are seeking parent volunteers. Sparks! is our parent-led science initiative, aimed at supplementing our students scientific experience with exciting hands-on activities. This Sparks! program will have a new format - The Sparks! Science Museum! We'll be transforming the gym into a scientific exploration zone full of stations designed to inspire investigation, stoke curiosity and encourage active scientific inquiry. We will need many volunteers to run the stations. No science background needed. Everything will be provided for you! The students will travel with their grade for 30 minutes exploring the exhibits. Feel free to sign up for 1 session or the entire day. We will have at least 10 stations and could easily use more than one parent at each one so sign up and bring a friend! This is guaranteed to be a great opportunity to share in some learning with your child! All volunteers need a CORI on file in the office.
Please contact me with any questions/concerns!

WEF Calendars ~ Available for Purchase in Dolbeare School Office
Many of you have asked how you can obtain the WEF School-Year Calendars. The calendars are available for purchase in the Dolbeare office for $20.00 each. They are also available at Honey Dew Donuts, Hart's Hardware, Wakefield Cooperative Bank, or any other school office in Wakefield. If you wish to purchase one, you can stop by any time to buy one with cash or check. You can also go to the WEF website at WakefieldEducationalFoundation.org to order one by credit card. Once you have done this, you may bring your receipt by the office to pick up your calendar.
These colorful and informative calendars are a great reference throughout the school year since they list all the early-release days, vacations, parent-teacher conference days as well as other useful information.
Have a nice day.
Our first Fall session of BOKS (Building Our Kids Success) is almost underway! The early morning program will run for five Tuesday and Thursday mornings from September 27 to November 3. The program brings children together before school to teach new skills, play fun games and learn a bit about nutrition too! We are looking for parents who can help Tuesdays and Thursday mornings from 7:45 to 8:30am. All you need is to complete a CORI form and be ready to have some fun. The number of parent volunteers we have directly impacts the number of kids that can participate, so please consider us!
We can be reached at DolbeareBoks@gmail.com. Thank you!
