Wakefield Community,

It is with great enthusiasm and privilege that I announce the appointment of Dr. Kim Smith as Wakefield Public School’s Assistant Superintendent effective July 2014.  After six months in Wakefield, it has become clear to me that Dr. Smith possesses the leadership skills, instructional expertise and values about teaching and learning to excel in this critical role.  I am convinced that Dr. Smith can best serve the children and families of Wakefield by expanding her role in our school system.

Dr. Smith has proudly served the Wakefield Schools for the last 25 years as Instrumental Music Director, Music Facilitator K-12, Assistant Principal and most recently, as principal at Wakefield Memorial High School.  As a music instructor in Wakefield, Dr. Smith built a state and regionally renowned music program leading the high school bands to 15 consecutive years of championship titles and gold medals.   As Assistant Principal, she designed an effective educational program for students at risk with social/emotional challenges and developed a diversity program aimed at promoting the school’s commitment to student differences.  Finally, in her current role as High School principal, Dr. Smith led the Wakefield Memorial High School community in a collaborative process to establish and bring to life shared core values, beliefs, and 21st century learning expectations.  Instructionally, she facilitated the implementation of a curriculum alignment initiative that established a guaranteed, viable and rich curriculum.  At the district level, she was also instrumental in co-leading a committee of educators to review the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s model system for supervision and evaluation.  Together the committee crafted a system, a plan for implementation, and an adaptation of teacher evaluation rubrics to reflect excellence in professional teaching practice.  Through her many accomplishments in Wakefield, Dr. Smith has distinguished herself as supportive of educators, passionate about her work and above all, student-centered.

In making this appointment now we ensure a smooth transition for both Dr. Smith and the school district.  We are able to initiate a search for a new Wakefield High School principal with ample time to identify a strong leader.  This thorough process will commence immediately and will be led by our interim Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Halloran.  I am confident that we will find a school leader that will continue to build on the fine work of Dr. Smith and her staff at Wakefield High School.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Smith on her appointment!  I am excited to partner with her to further enhance the educational experience for all of Wakefield’s students.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steve Zrike, Jr.
